Batteries used in a range of Nokia handsets, from the 1100 to the latest E60, are at risk of overheating during charging. Of 300 million BL-5C batteries manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. for Nokia last year, 46 million belong to the dodgy batch.

One hundred incidents have already been reported, but none have resulted in explosions, fire, or even a burnt finger. However, Nokia has said if your phone has a BL-5C battery you should probably keep an eye on it when charging.

Or, visit Nokia's website and check your battery's serial number against a list of the dodgy ones. If it appears on the list, Nokia will provide a replacement free of charge. Which is nice.

Though the risk seems minimal, and Nokia is certainly playing down any danger, it's probably worth checking.

Doesn't effect my N95 fortunately, even though it does get rather hot during charging lol.

Same here, mine isnt affected thankfully but it does get warm when charging or when im browsing the net.

Apparently it affected my e60, well it did, but i lost that on holiday a month ago. I'd not had any problems with it, i'm not sure how bad this actually is, i think they're just making sure rather than have a few exploding sony batteries. Either that or i was lucky as my battery was about 1.5 years old!

I'd disagree with their statement that this hasn't caused any explosions. One of my collegues had a nokia phone which used this type of battery. I say had because the phone, battery and charger are currently with Nokia for investigation.

He was awoken one morning by a large bang and when he rolled over in bed he found that his mobile had been blown off his bedside table to the floor. The battery had been blown out of the phone and there was clouds of smoke coming from under his bed as the battery melted its way into the carpet.

:eek::eek::eek:

He is currently discussing compensation with Nokia.

Doh... I was hoping that my battery was a duff one in my n80 but its a BL-5B and not BL-5C - the thing only last about 1 day and a half with out talk

BL-5C here in my N91 but it's not an exploding one, yay! I still get very good battery life out of mine so really couldn't have been doing with the minor hassle...
