Aloha. I am trying to expand my collection of hip-hop.

So far, some of my favourites include:

Ugly Duckling
People Under the Stairs
Edan
Roots Manuva
Dilated Peoples
DJ Format
The Roots
Phi Life Cypher
Blackalicious
Ultramagnetic MCs
Handsome Boy Modelling School
Jehst
Braintax
Yoda

Any recommendations for a fan of the above artists/groups?

Prefuse '73: slightly mashed up electronica hip-hop noodlings. Fantastic IMO, but not straight up hip-hop by anymeans :)

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (with particular mention to his colab. with Dan the Automator - "Deltron 3030", awesome album).
Jurassic 5
Aesop Rock

:)

Chee-ars!

I'm already aware of J5 and Aesop, but Deltron is news to me. I think he's on the Handsome Boy modelling school album and IIRC isn't he on some Gorrilaz stuff?

Sounds great too.

edit: ah just occurred to me that Dan the Automator is HBMS too :p

Haha yep.

Also, don't know if you already have it but OutKast - Stankonia seems to always be overlooked as a serious hip-hop album because of the success of Ms.Jackson. Speakerboxx/The Love Below is also an awesome album.

Also, as mentioned above, have a listen to some RJD2, the guy's a legend.

Oooh ooh...AND try Madvillain - Madvillainy. :D

Not entirely sure if you'd class some of these as gangster or not. i guess Mos and Talib can sometimes sound a bit gangster, but they're amazing lyricists

Talib Kweli
Mos Def (these 2 collaborating is amazing)
Kanye West
Roots Manuva
Skitz
The Roots
Blackalicious
Aceyalone
Common
Blueprint
The Coup
DJ Format
Hi-Tek
Soul Position
Herbaliser
Phi Life Cypher
DJ Yoda (quite popular, personally i don't like)

that should keep you going :)

What's the best 'Quest album? I only have Midnight Marauders after i saw it for £1.99 in Music Zone, it's a travesty i tell you! :D

£1.99 :O a bargain!

Low end theory is a classic

People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is also good

and Beats, Rhymes and Life is pretty good tho

But im sayin, midnight marauders and low end theory are the best

If you like guru from gangstarr but want something more chilled, the jazzmatazz albums are good

btw B.Y.S. should be on the gangstarr list, great riddim.

why cant i say f t w, it gets starred out :(

Yeah i have to agree, s'pose he can't do the same stuff all the time, he wanted to try something different with a "hiphy" form of hip-hop or something...

I think he pretty much failed sadly. :(

He's got enough good stuff (all of it bar that) to contest any bad stuff though. :)
