Noob question - Why can't we just have one lead to TV and then one lead to Amp?

This is exactly what was wondering about!!

And ARC will happily pass through DTS/DD etc from your devices (eg: bluray) through your TV to your amp? And if the amp is not on your TV will decode the DTS/DD to stereo?

So your amp just has one input ("TV") really?

Yup. I think I can specify on the TV whether I want it to pass through DTS/DD or whether to just pass through a stereo signal bit I just leave it set to default and it passes through whatever the source is outputting.

I have one HDMI connection going to my amp from the TV and one remote that's all.

...and the TV is a?

I believe for example the ARC on my Panasonic GT30 cannot do what you're suggesting!

The TV shouldn't be set to do any processing. All processing should be done by the amp as it will be better at it (except upscaling! tvs are better at upscaling).

I think the suggestion is, where possible, this is nice...

ALL DEVICE --> TV --> AMP

Anything you're watching on the tv, ha sits audio pushed (unmolested) to the amp. And if the amp isn't on, the TV converts it to stereo.

Best of all worlds, in the simplest way.

The problem seems to be, how well TVs support ARC? ie: How well they can pass audio through unmolested, or indeed, convert it to stero if needs be?!

ps: This is what people seem to be suggesting about ARC if I've understood!?

Samsung are worse for ARC being unreliable.

I know it's personal choice n all, but there really is no reason to use tv speakers if you have an amp + external speaker set up.

My TV has Harmon Kardon speakers and it actually does a very good job of reproducing a fake 'surround' image, but I still use my amp and speakers even for my daily news watch with a brew.

Will HD audio formats be passed through from the TV to the amp via ARC?

I've taken a couple of comments on this thread as suggesting some TVs will allow DTS/DD/HD audio to be passed out of the TV (via ARC HDMI to an amp) for example if using Netflix or Plex. And more importantly, if playing a Bluray (or other external devices) into the TV (over HDMI), its audio is then passed through the TV to the amp (ARC HDMI).

And if you turn the amp off, the TV instead just plays stereo sound.

Sounds like the prefect result... As long as I've understood this correctly!

DTS and DD aren't HD audio though. I was talking about DTS HD and Dolby Digital EX (I think it is). I know from my own experience that Plex will not pass these formats over ARC but I'm not sure about pass through hence my question.

So the more exotic audio formats? As you point out DTS HD, DD EX and Dolby Atmos?

So if these are played into the TV, can it, (a) pass them through unmolested down the ARC HDMI to the amp? And (b), if the amp is not on, can it then convert these to stereo to play locally (out of the TV speakers).

Thanks for the info RE Plex on the TV. Seems a right pain in the rear if you want a means of playign Amazon Video and Plex with fully complient to audio & 4K!

I don't know how you're playing Plex and Amazon Video but you could plug the device straight into the amp to use as necessary.

Still don't get why you don't just use your proper amp/speakers for everything, it's easier and sounds better.

I have a Logitech remote that turns all the appropriate devices on/off and has shortcuts to the right channels.

I literally never use the TV for audio.

For me the surround system isn't ideal late at night when half or more of the house is asleep and I want to watch TV, the TV speakers then give me less bass and finer tuning of the audio volume/clarity.
