North Korea

You guys talking about Kim or Trump?

Both. If you had to pick, which haircut would you go for? I mean if you had to have one their haircuts, which would you choose? I think Kim's based purely on this picture of Trump.

why does he even bother getting onto threats

he could just publicly say that NK are inconsquential and not worth bothering with

if you enter into this threatening dialogue you end up playing their game

if you just call them what they are, a nothing nation that offer nothing to the rest of the world...you dont have to escalate things

now all the NK press broadcast to their nation that the US is threatening war...if he wasnt so thin skinned or worried about what people think of him, he wouldnt have felt the need to raise the stakes

sat round that table with the cameras he could have just shrugged his shoulders and said screw them , they are nothing (what you do in private may be different, but play your own game in public)

If someone is threatening to attack you in the street, at what point do you retaliate? you're so far off point, you can't just play nice and potential aggressors will suddenly come to their senses and allow you to walk free. NK have been hell bent on getting a useable nuke for years and years, at what point do take their word for it that they want to use one. It's too dangerous to just shrug it off as hot air..

remeber though country is just its people.

why start a war if you can kick the problem down the line a generation or two till theres more reasonable people.

I think the point is missed.

Kim is making his standard empty threats because he needs to look like he is a threat to the powers who oppose him and knows full well that the US will continue to pretend that his threats are credible because it suits them to keep SK on edge. So long as SK feel threatened by NK, the US will continue to sign military agreements with SK that allow them to keep a significant presence in the east. Their presence there is not about keeping NK at bay but making sure they have a handy base in the area.

This is true but i cant help but feel we are more likely to end up with a crazy old school general or uncle take power and call for war than another Kim Jong Nam.

Problem, of course is, that unlike any other totalitarian regime in NK there is no internal alternative to even attempt anything soft. No organised enough opposition, no viable leader, no organised underground, not even colonel or general to attempt military coup. no one to sponsor, arm or put on fliers, drop across the nation and give hope. It's not going to be like DDR with "tear down this wall Mr. Un and crowds on the streets. Therefore problem like NK has to go down as provocation. An island somewhere. A postcard town in South Korea. A bus full of tourists. NK gets the blame, then other nations insist on UN action, US gets mandate, 4 day swift attack with regular troops, one division of tanks and few aeroplanes then hand it over to south korea would be enough. You don't have to nuke it from orbit. You just need to convince China to look away...

NK is pointless.

The only thing to do is impose sanctions and just watch them.

Let them become a nuclear power the entire state will implode within 50-60 years anyway.

Why would they implode?

Sanctions don't work in NK, they been dealing with them since forever. They don't even have a word for "freedom" and other sort of type of words in their korean version of language, so hoping the population to rise up and change things isn't going to happen.

The population are brainwashed from birth and don't know anything else, it would be a miracle for any sort of inside change to happen, you could hope that the elite would do something, but they won't do anything too because the moment anyone steps out of line they get sent to a nazi-style camp along with their family.

The soldiers on the border with South Korea all have requirements that they must have families to stop them deserting.

North Korea is Nazi Germany in 2017 and the world is not doing anything about it.

..yeah, passing the buck would be handy if we knew they weren't going to do anything. I suppose that was Obama's stance..

Hopefully Trump has some balls and does something instead of being all mouth.

Too late now, the ball like been kicked down the field too many times, they got nukes and they can make them small enough for missiles. Military action is out of the question now.

tbf nazi germany was actively invading places left right and centre that they felt should belong to them, north korea at the minute is at least sticking to their borders

That isn't the issue. The people living there ain't having the best of times. Listen to the people who escaped from North Korea and they tell you it's hell.

There are reports that there are camps (Camp 22 or Hoeryoung concentration camp) where they do nazi-style medically experiments on prisoners for a example.

Aside from that, there are the normal concentration camps and re-education camps.

Remember Otto Warmbier, what could cause a 22 year old man to die from a coma?

they're still sticking to their own borders though, i'm not gonna deny a country being **** to it's own citizens (and people who go there voluntarily) isn't a horrible thing (calling it hell sounds pretty accurate), it's just that it doesn't get the international communities backs up like openly invading other countries, which i think is what nk will have to do in order to spark off any serious repercussions.

I am sure there is a poster on here who organises trips to odd places like NK, maybe they could shed some light on what it is really like in NK, thats if they saw "real life".

Nope as far as I'm aware you get taken round very specific routes/areas with little opportunity to wander off.

Far better just reading reports from people who actually escaped the regime?

Trump sounds pretty decent in that video lol..

What happened?

He sounds decent in nearly every video all throughout his campaign, when you watch them for yourself without the 'journalistic' slant and out of context sound bites of today's media.

As been said by Screeeech, it was easy to dismiss NK previously and that may still be the case now, but there will come a time, perhaps sooner than some may think that they would need to be taken seriously. In terms of a war, of course they'll lose - but that war could easily be started by Nuclear device detonated by NK on foreign soil causing huge societal, political and financial turmoil.
