North Korea

Once always thought this should have been nipped out long ago.

Has the world not learnt?
They will get more and more dangerous.
The people live in fear and are completely repressed.

Needs to be finished since sooner the better

as I've said many many times. We live in a reactive society.
You can't say nobody was warned. It's not as though North Korea has been hiding anything. Far from it. Fair play to them actually. They have been firing missiles, working on Nukes and putting the entire thing on display for the world to see.

The west can stick it's head in the sand all it wants. IF the nukes start falling, nobody can say we didn't have enough time to prevent it.

I worded it stupidly, i know they have such weapons as they like killing their leaders family members with them, but politically people fear the word "Nuclear" like the plague, regardless that actually it isn't really as scary as a Biological weapon at all, sure a holocaust is certainly... bad, but a tiny amount of a virus/parasite could literally wipe the planet out.

A nuclear war would be devastating globally and would in many ways end life as we know it.

But while N Korea has been doing all of this whybis it only the US who are responding. Does the UN or NATO not have an obligation to respond to the threat?

The best thing the US can do is call urgent talks with China and negotiate, any action the US takes will have to involve them or it's going to be a mess.

I get the feeling (might be wrong), but lets say a war did break out with the US and NK. Would China back NK?

To be honest China aren't doing anything

Russia aren't doing anything either.

But TBH I can't see them coming to defend NK if war with the US breaks out. They aren't going to risk it all for the fat man's ego. If it's left to just the US and NK to fight it out, it will be over in a day and everyone benefits from him being gone at this point. China and Russia will simply wait until it's over and move into claim some of the land to maintain a buffer zone to SK.

Problem is Kim is still a human even though he lives in a cult mentality and he's going to bury himself in more and more guilt and shame which will manifest itself in more and more argressive, bizzarre and retaliatory behaviou, no putting the toothpaste back in the tube now. His pride must be going through the roof. Not keeping to your word in one of the worst things you can do.

Doesn't he always say though on Korean TV "we'll defend ourselves and strike if they attack us".....meaning he's actually got nothing to lose. The US aren't going to kick off first.

But if he launches missiles in to Guam waters like he is planning, the US can't not respond to that. Their path takes them right over SK and Japan as well, so they won't be to chuffed given how unreliable NK's missiles have been in the past.

The real problem for the US is that the Obama ruined their credibility with his "red line" threat which he never acted upon. The Koreans might rightly imagine they can directly threaten the US with nuclear weapons without any consequence. That is a very dangerous game.

A lot of people blame Jimmy Carter for laying the foundations of this, he basically built several nuclear reactors and gave NK a 10 year supply of oil to prevent a nuclear war.

Those people are idiots, Carters plan to build clean nuclear reactors for NK to replace their dirty ones on the condition they give up their weapons program was a massive step forwards. It not only provided a safety measure for the west but was a beacon to the people of NK that the USA no longer meant them harm, and the George Bush ruined everything by taking a confrontational stance instead of a cooperative one, just reinforcing all the misgivings the Koreans had always had about the USA :(

It only takes a miscalculation or failure of the rocket and it comes down on Japan or Guam

Then the donald will have two choices

1. Do nothing and be seen as the president who is nothing but all talk
2. Start a war

I just hope NK come to their senses, I really feel for the people of NK, they are being led to destruction by a pathologically insane leader...though i have read and watched a few articles/documentaries on people who have fled NK, they all say the same thing, they sort of wish it would happen so the whole country can move forward. The place would be completely different in 10/15 years time, it would be prosperous and most likely, like S.Korea, a technological hub for the world. What a dire situation the whole thing is..

It's quite remarkable how idiots can lead entire countries.

Sounds like a good chance to test THAAD tbh - would be a response without going OTT

North Korea have "bet the farm" on becoming a nuclear power, hoping that this will get them "taken seriously" by other countries, after all still very few countries in the world have nuclear weapons.

NK is a very poor nation, it's very survival depends on a game of "bluff" with the other other countries in the region and interested parties such as USA/China/Russia. While they say the won't negotiate this is exactly what they want/have to do. They are trying to force this negotiations from a stance of "strength" where they hope for big wins/concessions. They are calculating that USA will not to preemptive action against them and that any response by the USA will have to be extremely well judged in order not to tip the whole region into a terrible war (nuclear or not).

It's on a knife edge, one mistake and the consequences are too horrible to contemplate, apart Kim Jong-un and Trump are toxic and together they may well be nuclear (forgive the pun)
