North Korea

I cant remember it's name but it lies very near the Chinese NK border and is quite far from any plate boundaries. There i was activity like 10-15 years ago or something. I remember it because there was a joint research effort between several countries which included us and NK...at NK request if i remember correctly.

I am doubtful these underground tests will affect anyone beyond the earthquakes.

From older studies with the US tests IIRC you need enough energy to produce earthquakes of around magnitude 9+ to have significant impact outside of a very localised area. To put it into perspective it took going from something like ~1Mt to ~5-6Mt to go from a 6.5 quake to a 7 quake so you'd need to be setting off underground devices in excess of 100Mt to get there :s

I read something few months ago that suggested that the area they keep setting nukes off runs along the tectonic plates and if they keep exploding them in the same place over and over it could cause earthquakes all over the world.

I tired googling the source just now, but couldn't find anything.

Needless to say, I think it was batcrap insane.
Isn't it the plot to Superman(1978) film.

drop enough nukes in the gooey liquidy part near the earths core and set them off sequentially going the opposite direction of rotation to the core and we could stop the core from spinning :O

Also the plot to James Bond: a view to a kill, though the end goal there was to flood Silicon Valley.

That's the plot from "The Core", just in reverse.

It probably is that one, did it have a big crater lake on top? It's sits right on the border and is practically a holy site in NK as it's where Kim Jong-il was born in their mythology.

Big reason for all this nonsense which could have dire consequences is that 627,500 active military personnel along with 5,000,000 in reserve would be a huge Asian asset loss to the US empire when this army (South Korean) would come under the command of a US General in the case of a military conflict.

Regularly provoke, antagonize, the North, ensure that such actions keep propping up the regime, which would eventually collapse with no external enemy motivating the people to support and unite behind the regime, and you have the excuse to maintain a huge military asset in Asia - not just the bases but an abundance of troops that can be called upon.

Destroy any attempts by the South for reconciliation, ignore the South Korean president's pleas, all for selfish global domination reasons. Washington is like an evil doctor who intervenes and makes things ten times worse. They don't want a true peace between the North and South for this reason, and slowly but surely, this is being perceived by more South Koreans.

Plus the US defence industry makes a lot of money - that said I would be wary putting it all 100% at that doorstep. Technically the original war has never stopped just paused in an indefinite cease fire - the ball was largely in the court of NK and could have been settled largely in favour of NK in terms of a final peaceful settlement but they've refused.

So you truly believe if we leave the problem to sort it self out, it will sort it self out?

Obviously thats the best course of action, I mean, name a time when appeasing a madman hasn't worked out ........ ;)
Assuming you're going for the obvious there, that was appeasing an aggressor who was hell bent on conquering other countries, not somebody obsessed with their own countries defense.

One key problem is that they see "their country" as including South Korea, and they did in fact invade the south within living memory.

While they do strive for reunification (something SK also wants, just on their own terms) it's unlikely they would attempt to do so by military means, they know that even 1v1 they would lose to SK. Their nuclear ambitions are intended as a safeguard to stop America from getting bored and deciding to "Freedomize™" them.

Also it's a bit dubious to call the north Koreans invaders in the Korean war, the USA invaded their country then partitioned off the lower half to try and make a new one, they took it back, then the USA invaded again and kicked them out.

Standard issue US/UN **** up...

Get involved in somebody else's civil war, provide just enough support to the losing side to ensure a bloody stalemate that lasts for decades. :/

Happens every single time....

They didn't send the girl scouts to "take it back". Call it what it was.

Well not really. The entirety of Korea had been occupied by Japan for a number of years until Allied forces defeated them at the end of WW2. The liberation forces of Russia and the USA were tasked with forming temporary ruling military governments until which time UN supervised county wide democratic elections for a new government could take place (similar to East / West Germany). Also like Germany, Russia refused to give up their half and vetoed any attempt by the UN to unify the two counties. This left the South end the only UN recognised portion of Korea.

The North became a puppet state to Russia and China and were reliant on them for more or less everything. With this backing they invaded the South in their own attempt to unify the country.

We did this in school, its going back some,so some might be a little incorrect but I'm sure the internet has the events in their entirety documented.

No that's about right LOAM although its not clear who fired the first shots its quite clear that the North advanced well beyond their borders make it to Pusan Province within 3 months before finally being halted.

Well technically they created the civil war in the first place by partitioning off part of Korea to make South Korea. The Koreans to the north wanted the rest of their country back.

Korea was occupied by Japan. Russia liberated the North, America and the Allies liberated the South. After WW2 the North invaded the South, backed by Russia and China. The South fought the North backed by America. Why from this do you think the South belongs to the North? Does the North also not belong to the South?

Realistically in this, you're ignoring the fact that the North is a Communist **** hole, and the South is one the most successful countries in South East Asia, and infact the world. You're ignoring the fact that Communist Dictatorships are evil and should not exist. We should support the South on the basis that they are a free democratic society, even if they were completely in the wrong and should be ruled by the North, which they aren't. Please stop your apologist behaviour and realise how lucky you are to live in the West and stop trying to make out the USA/West is evil. We are the richest most successful countries on the planet with the best records on human rights and the least amount of corruption anywhere. I would invite you to travel to Russia, China, Venezuala or North Korea if you want to see how the other half live.
