does anyone know of any good places to visit in northern france?
I would say no further south than paris say?
what about slightly east, say brussels or something, are those places any good this time of year?

Belgium IS nice, but not Brussels. Go if you like art,. but the places to go are Brugges and Ghent, but don't speak French :) Depends what you're looking for really, is it a trip for two? One? Interests/aims?
 
Mont Saint Michel was recommended to me by my French work mate, its a small island off the coast of Normandy that you can drive to but when the tide comes in you are stuck.
 
Normandy and Britanny are both nice. The Voges mountinains are quite far north.
Generally, france is better the futrher south you go, and keep to the perimiter (Pyranees-Med-Alps).
 
Even the Pas-de-Calais region is nice countryside (Calais is a dump though of course) - Boulogne is a nice town, Le Touquet is a popular seaside resort. Normandy is nice also - stunning countryside and Caen looks like its worth spending more than the 1 hour I had there :p Plus you can do the whole Normandy landings thing there. I want to take a look at the Somme region next - Arras, Amiens etc.
 
Northern France is a great place to go if you have an interest in The Great War, the Battlefields and Graveyards are very poignant places. In fact Northern France is great to visit for a trip through the History of Britain at War on the continent, from the 11th Century through the 100 years war to WWII. Anywhere in Norde-Pas-de-Calais, Picardie, Champagne-Ardenne, Lorraine, Alsace, Il-de-France, Basse-Normandie, Haute-Normandie, or Bretagne are full of so many Historical villages and towns, it can take years to get around.

I agree on the WWII memorials, NW france is also Champagne region too. Amien is also very pretty.
 
Brussels a month ago is absolutely awesome, height of the Mussels season (yummmmmmmyyyyyyyyy!!!!), and hardly any tourists. Cliche, but do try Belgian chocolate in Brussels, its like drops of heaven in your mouth.

South of France for Mediterranean climate = win. Bordeaux is also very nice, bit expensive, make sure to go vine tasting (and make sure u know someone who will drive for u ;) )
 
Nantes is supposed to be quite nice, and you can catch a return flight there from East Midlands Airport.
 
Mont Saint Michel is beautiful - is huugley popular so youmight be fighting crowds at this time of year.

Brussels - Beautiful, and a great city with great, waffles, beer chocolate and chips!

Paris - of course

Chartres - beautiful huge church
 
Normandy and Brittany are beautiful.
My mother lives near St Vaast, on the East cost of the Normandie peninsula.

Highly recommended is Dinan (not far from Mont-St-Michel) - just south west of the peninsula. It's a beautiful medieval town built on a steep river bank with stunning churches and an amazing château - lots of history and extremely romantic... more so than Paris in my girlfriend’s opinion.

Obviously the landing beaches and their history must also be seen, and the huge cemeteries... extremely moving.

Northern France is quieter, prettier and has some gems to visit. Southern France is full of immigrants, is too hot, and is fairly dull in my opinion :)

Correction. Champagne is the Champagne region. Hence its called Champagne.
