Not impressed by C300 SSD 256GB

Not too sure what you mean with the 2nd point in your post? You mean log out and leave PC on the main windows log in screen for a bit while the SSD automotically carries out maintenance?

Yep. As the SSD controller chip firmware won't do anything if the drive is in use. So leaving system idle at Windows desktop doesn't count due to background tasks. But leaving PC idle while not logged into Windows was the recommended thing to do, as no background tasks running.

No idea what length of time is needed, so best ask Crucial directly.

SATA-2 isn't really the problem, it doesn't slow the C300 down much. But it looks like your mobo is stuck operating in SATA-1 mode for some reason, which is a big performance drain. What's also a problem is that your motherboard doesn't support AHCI or NCQ. If I were you I'd buy a PCI-e SATA controller and hook the C300 up to that. OCUK do the Asus U3S6 for £25, which is a good choice if you're not using your second PCI-e 16x slot. Plus is adds a couple of USB3 ports as a bonus.

Is this not an option + W7 to reap the benefits of your new drive without spending heaps on a fuller update?

£30 well spent and then either sell or us it later when you've upgraded your motherboard :)

Was thinking about that option but to be honest I have quoted DrBombcrater's post because it does seem my motherboard is in SATA I mode at the moment and can't figure out how to switch it to SATA II mode and therefore, theoretically at the very most, double the read speed being posted by the benchmark. Any ideas?

It appears from this post below you've got SATA and SATA II ports via two different controllers:

As long as you have suitable backups try swapping over the ports the C300 is connected to on the motherboard, good luck!

Just using the nForce ports. The Silicon ones have been disabled. Looks like I'm not the only one stuck on SATA I...

Device manager gives me the option to select SATA II but when I restart to apply the change, it's back to SATA I and the BIOS doesn't have anything relevant.

Tried swapping the C300 to port 2 as that was showing as SATA II in Windows for my 2TB backup drive but got "disk boot failure". Now back to using my Velociraptor and will have to do fresh install again on C300. Don't worry, no valuable data lossed. Just have to do a clean install again for the 3rd time lol.

Looks like a can of worms there :(

Disappointing that there's not more being done by Crucial to resolve the issues after it's been highlighted on their own forums.

Crikey, why did you do that? £350+ on a system like that for a storage solution the benefits of which your system will not support and even people with bleeding edge systems think isnt worth it?

Well you have done it now mate. Full overhaul is your only option or you might as well sell it, even if you lose money it will still be more valuable spent on a new cpu/mobo/ram. An ocuk bundle might be best here.

;)
