Not sure whether to upgrade rig - 2 x HD4870 crossfire

Interesting you say that, because when I first started benching and clocking my GTX480, I was a bit surprised that it didn't show as much of a jump from my GTX460 as I was expecting.

I started a thread about it, actually - here

The consensus seemed to be by the end of the thread that the Q6600 was bottlenecking the 480 to some degree, and certainly stopping it from posting the types of results it's capable of.

Pretty happy with it now considering my fears about it being hot and noisy were unfounded (in my experience anyway), but in all honesty it was a pretty pointless upgrade when my clocked GTX460 was performing so well anyway. Still, I guess this will stand my rig in better stead for upcoming games until I upgrade to Bulldozer, Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge...

Thanks for the input. :)

As straxusii said, your cards are equivalent to a 5870 in performance so you're looking at a minimum of £220+ for a noticeable increase in performance, although the 512mb vram can't be doing you any favours at 1920x1080 I would have thought.

Since you're on a dual core, it might be better to spend the cash on a quad core ?

I am in a very similar position and I have decided to save what money I would spend on upgrades now and instead do a full upgrade with next gen (7xxx ATI card, Ivybridge etc). All that I am missing out on is DX11 (no real loss tbh) and eyefinity (no problems as I only have the one monitor at 1920x1200).

In all honesty I'd recommend you do the same and just wait and see what will happen in 6-12 months time ^_^
