not your fault your fat

While it makes sense to me that there is a genetic reason some people keep weight more readily than others, I do think that it's mainly down to how much you exercise and what you eat. Common sense really.

Yay! An excuse for the problem of an increasingly obese population to get get even worse as people adopt an apathetic attitude, blame something out of their control and stop looking for ways to combat the symptoms if not the cause \o/

What a load of ********!

People are fat because they take in more calories than they burn up. Plain and simple and that is the end of the argument. The only gene these people have is the one that makes them greedy ********. Fat gene, more like a cake gene.

How come all the overweight people I know, shovel buckets of food down their throats, do no exercise, drink heavily. Is that down to genetics? I don't think so, it's lifestyle.

Needs to be quoted

Of course it's all down to a gene. I mean, the obesity levels today are the same as they were in the 1950's isn't it now.

Absolute waste of time.

yes, i do agree, however, i am fairly active, least ways a lot more active than some people who i know how eat more crap, and are slimmer, and i *try* to avoid eating as much crap as possible (with the occasional slip up) yet i weigh more than people who do naff all, and eat like pigs.

glad i have an excuse now though ;)

I really love this story its gonna get banded around as being the reason some people are obese (about 30% of the population  ) but lets look at the stats.

They found people with two copies of a "fat" version of a gene had a 70% higher risk of obesity than those with none, and weighed 3kg (6.5lb) more.

People carrying one copy of the "fat" FTO variant had a 30% increased risk of being obese compared to a person with no copies of that version.

Half of white Europeans carry one copy of the variant and one in six has two copies, experts estimate.

The team does not yet know exactly what the FTO gene does or how the different variants work to influence body weight.

So worse case scenario you're one of the 1 in 6 that has two copies of the "fat" gene and carry a 70% higher risk of being obese. So that's 4 out of those 6 who are at risk.

Now look at the weight increase 3kgs or 6.5lbs. Since obesity if measured using BMI (however flawed it might be) you are obese if your BMI is over 30.

So a 6 foot male would have to be 221lbs (about 15.5st) to class as obese. The 6.5lbs added due to his genetics is about 3% of his total weight.

If any of you have read my posts in SA and even seen the pics i've posted you'll realise i'm coming from the other end of the spectrum, my genetics mean that i'll never be obese but i've made lifestyle/diet changes to fight my genetics and work towards the body shape I want.

If the 1 in 6 who have the genes that mean they potentially carry an extra half stone want to lose that weight then they need to change their lifestyle.

Look at the size of people 100 years ago when cheap high callorie food didn't exist and nobody owned a motor car. There were far less fat people back then.

I believe this gene exists but to what extent it plays is another matter.

Absolutely spot on mate.

What the article fails to mention is that hundreds of scientists have popped up saying this study is a load of tosh. At least according to the news this morning.

Except for those who are fat because of a medical condition :) I seem to have to say this in every thread of this type - and it isn't even because I am fat ;)

If they have found anything at all it is a gene for lack of self control/self discipline. Or perhaps even one that governs hunger. The fact is, you consume more energy than you burn, you gain weight. Simple as.

While that's true as a base statement it's always a more complex issue, some people for whatever reason just find it hard to control their intake. Just as some people find it hard to control their 'I'm a complete ******' gene. All too easy to slip into bad habits, just because theirs don't include overeating and as such doesn't give them a visible result doesn't make it any less applicable.

Edit: That's not meant as a personal attack, just a point of reference, having just re-read it you may think it was :)
