Now Hollywood wants Hotfile taken offline

It's just like fighting a hyda, cut off 1 head and 2 more pop up to take its place. Based on that theory eventually there will be so many websites team america wont know what to do.

With every site they close down brings us one step closer to decentralised networks.

Chasing short term gains are going to really come back and bite the likes of MPAA and RIAA so hard.

I'm curious to see how they would tackle the likes of freenet etc should they ever become popular.

Yup, it's getting ridiculous now, to the point where any file-sharing becomes illegal by definition.

I say ban google for linking to everything. Take on someone that is known to the wide public, see what happens then.

Google has had a lot of search results blocked recently.
I had a page that was more blocked results than results.

This one will be interesting.

Everybody knew they were after Mega Upload due to piracy, but the claims in court only stuck because of all his other illegal activities.

So faced with another file host that isn't up to their necks in dodgy business, does removing violating content and proactively attempting to block the upload of copyright files get you off the hook ?

That remains to be seen. Personally i hope the courts tell them where to get off. Its time Hollywood recognized piracy is a problem of their own creation, and shutting down every website you can find is not the solution to their problems. Much as banning the sale of VHS recorders was not the solution to the problem of 20th century film piracy.
