NS1000 vs DR150

How do the DR150 perform on a plane?
I am undecided between a NS1000 and a DR150 pair myself, I dont travel a lot but have a long flight coming up. I am planning to use the DR150 as a pc headset when I get home so fancy the open back will help keep my ears cooler when WOW raiding :)

But if the Dr150 will totally suck whilst on a plane I am tempted by the NS1000 instead.

Been reading reviews for a week now and cany decide :(

The DR150's are open phones, so they do leak noise. The NS1000's would be much better on a plane being closed phones with noise cancellation.

I don't need closed phones or noise cancellation because I game in my attic room, and I'm not disturbing anyone by the small amount of sound leakage from my headphones.

DR150 would be useless on a plane, as Ravenger pretty much said. They will leak way too much noise, and let too much noise in. NS1000's on a plane, are your friend. :)

This. I had to sell my DR150 as my gf was complainging too much about the sound leakage when she was watching tv. They really are like little mini speakers to other people.

The NS1000 are great and the sound cancelling works fantastic. I can't even hear my gf shout at me now and she has to throw things at me to get my attention :D

Yes I know the Dr150 are open and as such would leak some noice, I guess the issue is would they be unlistenable or just impacted. hence would they "total suck"?
Eg compare them to freebie plane headphones these are open and also small compared to the ear cups of DR150, yet they are just about tolerable to listen to. So surely the Dr150 being bigger would be more listenable.
When I am sitting in St Lucia I am thinking the GS1000 could be unbearably hot being closed back, also when gaming I am often in just shorts as my room ends up at 26 degrees or more, so again I am worried the GS1000 could be very hot on the ears.

So yes I know the GS1000 would be significantly better on the plane, but would the Dr150s be tolerable? I will have Kindle, MP3, PSP and DS for the plane, so its not like I expect to sit and listen to 8+ hours of Hifi quality music, just decently bearable music to pass the time.

How well do the Dr150 cover the ears? I see a few reviews that say the NS1000 are a little on the small side for ears so you sort of have to tuck your ears in, where as I cannot find this re the DR150 and they also appear bigger from photos, so do the Dr150 cover the ears easier than NS1000, or are they really "on ear" rather than "over ear".

Thanks for all the help so far, bloody nightmare decision this one :)

The 150s are larger than the 1000s, I have no problems fitting my (medium sized) ears into the 1000s and they are comfy for me. Definitely over ear as opposed to on ear for me, can't imagine it'd be very isolating otherwise.

As for suitability? I can hear pretty much every noise with the 150s on like I can without, and likewise anyone around you can hear the sound like they were coming out of mini speakers, sound leakage is terrible. In contrast the 1000s block out most sounds, muffle the louder ones and as far as I can tell have next to no sound leakage, granted I only use them at low volume but there is no real need to have them at ear destroying volumes when it's practically silent otherwise. I'd go 1000s for a flight, the 150s are lovely I admit (and I do personally prefer them) but you can't go wrong with the 1000s for blocking sound out.

Sound quality is great on both so don't worry about how the DR150's will perform on or off the plane. They really impoved my mp3 listening .

It's more a case of how loud you will run them and how much you will annoy your fellow passengers or other people in the room.

And yes, the cups are smaller on the NS1000 but my ears fit in them fine.

The NS1000 also come with a hard carry case and the double adaptor so you can plug them into the plane sockets - just another small bonus.

I find the DR150s are slightly uncomfortable for wearing for long periods, but that may be because they're new, and so are a bit tight. It's partly because I wear glasses I think. I had the same problem but much worse with the Creative Fatal1ty headset, as they were like a vice on my head and were agonizing after a few minutes.

It's funny though because the DR150s are much more isolating than my previous set of phones - I find it difficult to hear when my wife's calling me. Every cloud has a silver lining...

My ears do get rather hot with these on but I wouldn't say it's uncomfortable. I forgot to mention the case + adaptor with the NS1000s, another thing to bare in mind is the cable length; 1m for 1000s, 3m for 150s.

Arggggghhhh!

Still can't make up my mind.

Think I am going to have to try to find somewhere I can test a set of DR150s, not going to be an easy one!

I think the DRs look closer to what I want/need generally. Since their primary use will be to become my headset for my PC then I do not really need complete silence.
Open cans seem to sound like they will match my needs more, I use speakers at the moment, but really enjoyed using my porta pros playing starcraft so figured could be worthwhile moving to a decent set of headphones playing WOW.

Love my ns1000's, got to try a pair of dr150's a while back but i wasnt as impressed as i was with the 1000's, the noise cancelling is great for watching movies on the pc, totally blocks out the drone of my cpu/case fans.

Closed have a solid (sealed) enclosure the only opening is where your ears go, open have a grill on the other side opposite where your ears go behind the drivers.

Often open headphones tend to sit on your ears whereas closed ones sit over your ears but theres no hard or fast rule there.

I prefer my 150s over my 1000s to be honest purely because they're open.

There is a difference in the sound between open and closed although I couldn't explain what it is, for home use I much prefer open though. Maybe someone with better powers of explanation can tell you the difference.

Edit: Beaten to it!

Open tend to sound more "natural" as the sound is better able to "flow" at the expense of sound leakage that can potentially annoy other people in the same room, etc. whereas closed tend to focus and restrict the sound but mean that only you can really hear it i.e. ideal for night time listening with people trying to sleep close by.
