NS1000 vs DR150

Likewise. I own both and NS1000s are a class above DR150s. I'll add a caveat though: they're better as long as they're adequately amped. The DR150s are a lot more forgiving of weak amplification.

As far as being closed goes, I find the combination of Active Noise Reduction and Dolby Headphone (from a soundcard or receiver) makes the NS1000s sound much more like open headphones than most other closed pairs I've heard.

Hmm, not noticed this before, but the headband has cracks in it. No idea how long they have been there. If it breaks, I will probably buy some DR50's and use the headband from that. I have been tempted to get some NS1000's on quite a few occasions. The thought of gaming with closed headphones, doesn't appeal to me though, and TBH, I don't really use headphones enough to warrant owning NS1000's as well. I prefer speakers when listening to music, so I only use the headphones for gaming and when watching films. I do use them for music every now and then, but not half as much as speakers.

Headband will probably last, I hope, as long as it doesn't get worse. If it weren't for the fact I don't like the idea of gaming with closed phones, I'd probably get some NS1000's if my DR150's headband goes **** up.

NS1000s are pretty much my main gaming headphones and are significantly better than the DR150s for reproducing in game directional audio with either Dolby Headphone or CMSS-3D. What's not so good is multiplayer, as they block out so much sound I tend to end up raising my voice when wearing them. That can annoy the missus.

That's my main reason against getting a pair, I only ever play multiplayer. Maybe some people can gauge the volume of their voice without having to hear it, so for them, closed phones are not a problem. I find it too weird TBH.

By the way - Marsman, I wouldn't raid DR50s to replace parts on DR150s. I think they are made of lower quality plastic. My DR50s had slight cracks in the headband within weeks of use. No cracks on my DR150s yet. DR100s had better quality plastic than DR50s. I got mine second hand and they had no obvious cracks.

Ah ok, thanks for the info.:) I'll decide what to do at the time, if they do break. Hopefully they won't, just depends if the cracks worsen from general use. If it does happen, then depending on funds at the time, might possibly get the NS1000's for film use and the odd music session, and grab either something else or gaming. Either that, or just get some more DR150's.

Ns1000 back on offer on play, but not at £50, they down to £60 like that south american river ;)

Still undecided, I think if I can get the NS for £50 I would, but at £60 the diff is a bit more than I want. I am going to hold out and hope for another offer. I dont realistically need to buy for a month, so will take the risk and monitor daily :)

For me its NS1000 @ £60+£15 for amp = £75. vs Dr150 at £48 so not an insignificant difference

Been burning mine in a bit (NS1000) and have to agree they do sound abit bass distorted with no amp or active noise reduction turned off. Havent tried with noice reduction on yet but will do this weekend.
Ignoring the bass though they do sound very very clear and precise.
Other half hates them as she says they make her feel sick, thats great news as it means they are safe from other use ;)
Definately a quality pair for £50, will decided on a E5 once I start some active useage this weekend.

Well gonna try the active this weekend, my view is for holiday I can use the active on (especially on plane) or my in ears or possibly my portapros for round the pool.
When i am gaming I will probably want the active on anyway, my 900 even though its under my desk sounds like a tornado anyway so I am guessing the active could really help to block that out.
But yes its very very much on my list of things to probably buy, tbh its more from the point of I would prefer to have one less thing to worry about charging than any other aspect ;)

You still have to charge the E5, you shouldn't really use it when charging (gets interference).

I personally use the ANR and a little bit of adjustment on my Sansa Clip+ to bass (you'll instantly notice the bass sounds really light and disappointing), and it sounds absolutely stunning with clearer highs than through the amp. I use it mainly when I travel to work, which is 4 miles of A road and when that switch is flicked, the traffic drone just disappears.

I have used it with my home PC too which sounds like a hurricane itself, again with that switch flicked the fans disappear.

The batteries also last a surprisingly long time, I've just changed mine after being used daily to, during and from work, so around 3 weeks. A rechargeable battery will probably last just as well, and if you nip to a certain pound shop they sell 12 packs of semi-decent branded batteries, they last well in their own right.

I've just ordered the NS1000, since it comes with a detachable cable, it is possible to replace the cable so it has iPod/iPhone remote controls?

Yes but the cable has a very narrow fit and is of a high quality. The socket is recessed into the housing so most 3.5mm jacks would be too wide. It would probably be easier to use an adaptor. An extention may also be beneficial as Goldring have reduced the cable length from 1.6m to 1.0m since the product was launched.

I must say these DR150's are amazing in Fallout: New Vegas. The sound is very clear and punchy. The sound effect you get when you discover an area, or start/complete a quest has an amazing impact. I wish the sound stage was a little wider, but the sound clarity more than makes up for it.
