NS1000 vs DR150

I must say these DR150's are amazing in Fallout: New Vegas. The sound is very clear and punchy. The sound effect you get when you discover an area, or start/complete a quest has an amazing impact. I wish the sound stage was a little wider, but the sound clarity more than makes up for it.

That's one reason why I love Dolby Headphone with either set of Goldrings. The soundstage it creates is huge. With the NS1000s in particular, I lose any sense that I'm hearing sound from headphone drivers and they basically become transparent, with a fine representation of differential depth.

I'd go for a Xonar card, but I'm reluctant to get rid of my X-Fi as the game compatibility is better. I might save up and get that Astro Mixamp which can take a 5.1 optical signal from the X-Fi and encode it to Dolby Surround, though I'd have to pay for the driver upgrade for the X-Fi to do it.

I'm doing something similar with a Victor SU-DH1 and X-Fi Prelude. First encountered Dolby Headphone using a Xonar D2 but as a gamer found the Asus card to be too much of a compromise in a few games. If it wasn't for the SU-DH1, plus software implementation in PowerDVD Ultra 9 (or Foobar2000 for music), I would have stuck with Xonar.

Well after reading most of the threads on headphones here I've gone and bought the DR 150's as I need to be able to hear the other half if she shouts :D

Ive got the Asus Xonar DG on the way from OCuK and the speedlink Mic has arrived.

Using the gigabyte onboard realtech sound just now. Used to have Creative Fatality.

I was previously using the Sennheiser PC165 headset and was very happy with them and was considerign another pair. Then I decided to read the threads here.

I have to say even without the new sound card I'm VERY happy with the sound quality of the headphones.

So to all that took time to post - thank you. You made a difficult choice easy :D

Looking forward to the new sound card and the headphones being run in :D

Ahh, Unlucky! I'll need to send the Asus Xonar DG back And get the Slightly more expensive Xonar DX.

I just checked, with 2 x 3870 in my Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 mb the pci slots are obstructed.

So hopefully if I call OcUK tommorrow and explain that I would like to send the card back unopened and spend twice as much money they will be fine :D

That will teach me to order in a hurry lol.

OK so Ive ordered the NS1000 as the other half can hear what I'm doing when playing games with the Dr150's being open... :(

Can anyone tell me, Do I need the FiiO E5 only when I use the NS1000's in passive mode but not in active mode?

The Xonar DX is a very nice sound card :D

Thanks.

The E5 is only really needed so you can use the phones in passive mode, so there is no need for battery replacement. In active mode, no amp required, as the circuitry acts as an amp. :)

Ok Thanks. At £13.30 delivered I just hit the buy it now button on the E5. Both should be here next week for the holidays :D

I'm still debating on which set.... My only concern with using the fiio e5 with the ns1000 headphones is that its not recommended to keep the fiio on charge...... And I cant be arsed to remember to charge after the 10 hours gaming or so....

How do people have this set up atm?

DR150 would be useless on a plane, as Ravenger pretty much said. They will leak way too much noise, and let too much noise in. NS1000's on a plane, are your friend. :)

Spot on,

I around 4-6 times a month. The NS1000 are SPOT ON.

I also have the filpo amp ;)

Thinking of swapping my HD555s for the NS1000. This is due to apparent better synergy with DH which sounds really tinny with the Senns paired with my DX.

Is the battery life decent on the NS1000? Can they be USB powered if necessary?

No, they are only battery powered. Rather I should say the NC circuitry can only be battery powered.

Battery life will vary person to person, which obviously depends on how much usage they get. Also will depend if they are left on when not in use at any time. I don't know if anyone has tested how long a battery will last with constant usage. Even then that can only be a rough guide as some batteries will have longer life than others.

Getting a battery charger and some good rechargeable batteries would be a good idea. However, for what a pack of good batteries and a charger will cost, you could buy the FiiO E5, and not worry about the batteries, save on journeys etc.

The nice thing about having noise cancelling on is exactly that, the noise cancelling is on :p Using an amp means you still get that background drone...

My experience is the batteries last a decent length of time, I use them to walk to/from work, so roughly 2 hours a day, and then they get a variable amount of use at work (1 hour minimum, sometimes as much as 4 else 5), the battery lasts me usually a week or 2. One thing you should bare in mind is the battery will run out faster if you've got a louder noise, I walk next to an A road for 4 miles or so, so I get a fair amount of noise to block out. As always, YMMV.

Oh and my experience with rechargeable batteries is poor. Charged my batteries, the next day put one in my 'phones and I as soon as there was any significant noise they started distorting (a sign the battery is low). My batteries have no issue powering anything else.

Edit:
It should also be mentioned that with noise cancelling on they can be weak on the bass front from some players, for example my iPhone had real issues. My Clip+ and sound card don't have this issue but with the E5 the bass is stronger.

Very true, but the amp does give the option of not having to worry about batteries. I suppose it depends where they are used most. At a PC with whining fans, then having the NC on, wins every time. :)

I bet you get some funny looks with those big cans on your head. ;)
