Nurse turns off life support 'by mistake'

I'm sure a lot of nurses don't.

This. I don't know how many people are aware, but nurses are not allowed to administer first aid either, not without having first aid training which anyone can do. First aid training is not part of nurse training.

These sorts of things happen all the time, maybe not with life support machines. A nursing home I know of a nurse gave penicillin to a patient who is/was allergic to it and also gave antibiotics to an asthma patient without giving them steroids, and this happened in the same week.

Why does it stop with the directors ?

Surely it stops with the person who's job it is to do the hiring.

Or do you expect the board of directors of every major bank to personally check the background of every cashier to make sure they aren't likely to steal people's details?

Thats the whole point about being a director, you are taking on the responsibility for running the company properly and in some industries that comes with he expectation you will hire staff that can competently do the job. If you can't do or don't want to do that your not director material.

Just watched this on the news, and from what they were saying the Agency knew that the job required a nurse who was fully trained in ventilator patients (I'd guess that means resuscitation, and knowing what the ventilator is and how to use use it), but "did not have a system in place to check on the training of it's nurses", so basically sent out someone whose training they didn't know about. (did they even check for any qualifications?)

This is really quite horrific, to think that they poor guy was aware of exactly what was going on but unable to do anything.

That he knew this was an eventually going to occur sooner or later is a bit worrying. Surely at some point those concerns reached the desk of someone in Ambition. That agency does need closing and anyone even remotely high up in it needs to go away for a while.

Who's betting the nurse was from Nigeria or Romania or some place.

Part of our foreign aid to African countries goes on training doctors and nurses. We then bring them over here and hire them to work in our hospitals, etc.

So we fill our country with nurses who don't speak English and we screw the foreign countries we're sending aid to that little bit more.

Brilliant.

Most of us have done temp work through agencies in our life.

I would say that most of us ticked every single box saying we could do anything on the off chance we would get a better job, hoping that they never check up on us.

Crap hits the fan, you are in the deep end blagging your way through it.

Big problem is she screwed up royaly, agency should test their staff.

Punish her, but reform the recruiting practice, which will cost a lot of money therefore most likely not happen, but Punish the recruitment firm massivley.

it costs a lot more than not.

You realise how much money care agencies actually make? Paying Derek in admin for an extra couple of hours to make sure all their records are in order is hardly going to sink the company.

And I wouldn't be suprised if they are required to vet their nurses by law anyway.

Im not arguing agaisnt you, i am saying they will get away with what they can, now they have been caught hopefully it will improve.

Are you also telling me you have never been in a work situation where you have had to do something beyond what your job description entailed ? Again not arguing against you just saying.

Yes, you can, and we quite routinely do.

I disagree though. People (with normally some political or moral axe to grind) place a value on someone elses life. But its not hard to value this most precious comodity when its not yours ;)

I am sure the only person who can genuinely place a value on life is someone placing the value on their own life.

Ask yourself the question how much would I accept to terminate my own life ;) I bet its a hell of a lot more than your relatives would get if something happened to you from say neglect from some company.

Personally there is no amount of money I would accept to take my own life, so my life is priceless to me.
I may possibly accept a £100M now in exchange for giving them my life in 20 years time. Possibly, not certainly, I would need to think about it more.

I agree with most on here that staff should be properly tested. Sad story, wtf was she doing? I do think that she needs to lose her job. Things like this shouldn't be happening.

Oh and everyone ignore Kwerk, he's trolling again
