I have a HTPC which is soley going to be used for video play back,

The current spec is

Radeon 9700
Athlon xp 2700+
512 meg of ram.

I have currently bought a 1080p capable tv the 9700 just cannot handle playing high def video clips, also struggles at upscaling dvd's to this res.

I only want to cheaply upgrade the video card and it has to be agp, from the nvidia website it says the 6200 supports purevideo assisted HD decompression and scaling. Would it work fine with my pc or would paying extra for a 7600gs give me better quality/play back?

Or is the purevideo pretty much the same acorss the chipsets except includes (Spatial-Temporal De-Interlacing, Inverse Telecine, Bad Edit Correction are these needed at all?)

Thanks.

do a google for "combined comuinity codec pack" i can play full 1080p movies on an old intel onboard chip and an ati 9500 card perfectly

If you were definately going to purchase a new card, don't get the 6200, spend £10/£20 more and get a 7300 - 6200s are old technology

EDIT: Just to add a 7300 should handle HD playback no worries - You can pick up the bfg 3dfuzion 7300le model for £35

Tbh, i don't think any GPU is going to help you with that CPU.

HD can be encoded with many different codecs (H.264, VC-1 and mpeg2) to name the more popular ones.

I don't think you have a hope in hell of decoding 1080p H.264 (like bluray and hd-dvd discs). I doubt you could decode 1080p VC-1 either without a beefier CPU. You might be able to do 1080p mpeg2. The worst case scenario is probably bluray with H.264 and for that your going to need a good conroe system with a good graphics card.

As an aside, if your wanting to use blu-ray or hd-dvd discs, you will need a graphics card with HDCP.

Not available in AGP flavour unfortunately...

I thought the whole point of the purevideo technology was that they took away the decoding need from the cpu and the gpu did it instead... so providing the gpu supports the .h264 and other HD decoding formats, then CPU over head would be kept at a minimum

Im not so bothered about blu or HD DVD playing as once the dust settles i will get either a xbox 360.. what i would like to do for the time being is run a satellite card in my pc and pick up the free to view HD Channels.. i gather there broadcast at a lower bandwidth.

Also find my radeon 9700 a bit sluggish at upscaling videos, i will also be upscaling SD transmissions so all this extra purevideo technologies which says includes HD decoding and Scaling would help.
