Nvidia GTX470 Vs ATI 6870 (both @ £180)

I am sorry if i seem aggresive as its not my intention but i am very sure of what i am saying through my own experience and if you look at my first post i did recommend the gtx470 if overclocking is involved so not being biased at all. Gtx470/480 are known for there heat output so its not rocket science to know when somebody is worried about heat that these cards are not the correct choice.
 
6870 easily, never again will I be tempted to sacrifice noise levels and temps for the promise of overclock-ability, as I ended up keeping it at stock to keep the noise down until I then had to put it under water.

Now running an 'air cooled' gigabyte GTX460 @850, which I wish I had got from the start, and gaming @ 2560x1600! (Runs Black Ops with everything maxed and 8x aa at 60-75 fps)

As for other games, well I find most PC games suck these days...
 
If you do fancy a bit of digging i.e searching :p

Then a 560Ti can be found for £185 which would be the best choice in all honesty...with the difference in performance I would stretch that bit extra :)

Though in a straight comparision either or of those cards but I'd be tempted by the extra ram on the 470 for higher res and more demanding games in future :)
 
Go for the one you think is right, there's such a tiny amount of difference between them in real day to day use.

I'm happy with my 6870, very much so, quiet idle, not so under load (40%) but then I can't hear it because I'm gaming, 29-33 degrees idle and 40-44 degrees load.... I have no doubt that I would have been just as happy with a 470 though.

Let me put your mind at rest ;), I have a 470 with the zalamn on and the heat disserpation is very good. I was lucky enough to study this very subject at Uni, and believe it or not heat diserpation build is helped by the strength of the cooling source and the way the heat is offered to this(fan and heatsink). Now if you disperse the heat over a larger surface area and offer good airflow over this the ambient temperature is kept lower whilst dispersing heat. Now compare this to a stock heatsink and fan and you are correct the heat output will be higher and would require better case cooling to shift the hotter air.

Which of the two would i choose, either to be honest as i do not think you would notice the difference when there is one. If you prefer Nv go for the 470
 
Was a toss-up for me between the two and I would only know if I made the right choice if I went out and bought a 470 as synthetic benchmarks, reviews etc pit them virtually neck and neck. 470 owners will cherry-pick reviews that make their choice favourable and vice-versa with regards to 6870 owners.

If I were making the decision again this very day, I would choose this over any other 6870 or any 470 OCUK have for sale this very day purely because of the bundled software.

Yup, that's a nice bundle.
 
I must agree the 6870 is a better option if overclocking is not considered. imo, there is not much difference between gtx470 and hd6870 at stock clock. some benchs may say 6870 is faster some may say 470 is faster. the point is, if there is a game that 6870 can not handle, neither can 470. but 6870 use much less power and much cooler and quieter (also newer). I would chose 6870.
 
I would possibly suggest a 6950. Save 20 quid more and get a card that is faster than the 470, 6870 and 560. Plus, you get 2gigs of RAM and the ability to unlock it.
 
OK guys, thanks for your input, gonna sit on it during the next few days as I've added extra cooling in my case and the GTX280 seems fine atm (funny though as the cooling is over the RAM, which is unlikely to be the issue with the hanging, but meh).

It is a hard choice to make between those two cards I linked. The bundled software would tip me towards the 6870, but as I have a nvidia already, with the drivers already there etc, the 470 is definately fighting it's corner.
