Lol nooo... 8800 "Ultra" was a shade under the 400 mark iirc...

You couldnt buy a 9800GX2 for less than 420 pounds at launch. I dont see how this is any different...

I bought my 8800 GTX for £360 in January 07, so it probably was around 400 mark for the GTX at release.

The difference also this time is that ATI have got more more compelling products, both in terms of performance and price.

I won't be buying one but the 480 doesnt seem all that bad. It is the fastest single GPU solution and will hopefully get even faster with mature drivers. Sure it runs hot and draws a lot of power but if you're spending that much on a graphics card anyway, why would you care?

One must take into account that these are release prices to shaft early adopters/nvidia fans so i reckon they will settle down in a month or so.

Anyway, I don't think i will be buying another graphics card until the next generation now or unless we see some big price cuts. None of the cards seem to offer a huge amount more than what i already have.

Anyone have any idea on ATI's 6 series release date or a possible ATI 5890?

Why do you need the fastest single card solution though?
What benefits from having the fastest single card solution?

some games compatibly with x-fire/sli e.t.c. Also, what if you only want to upgrade and don't have a crossfire capable motherboard? It may end being cheaper, or more likely just plain easier just to get a 480.

I'm getting sick of people slating ATI's recent drivers when the vast silent majority are loving them and seeing constant performance gains. I've not had any problems and I've tried umpteen different officials and betas lately, all have been better than the last. If driver updates don't fix your problems be a man and at least consider the possibility of PEBCAK or your system being at fault.

The most sensible thing said in this graphics forum for at least two months!

Lol... what happens if that kind of noise ****es you off? It does me... my vapo(u)r-x cards are too noisy for my liking... and they're some of the quietest current-gen cards you can get... but then, I did come from 8800gts with fanless accelero s1s

Power draw is a complete non-issue though... if you can afford to spend 450 quid on a graphics card, you can afford the extra 50p/month in electricity :S
