The car maker's challenge to stay ahead in tech is a topic that Ars is going to be revisiting over the next several months, so what better way to get our feet wet than to talk with the chip maker that has become synonymous with high-performance GPUs? Over the past five years, Nvidia has been making a big push into automotive technology, hoping to power not only the graphic information displays and entertainment systems that have become increasingly popular in cars, but also to get in on the ground floor of the self-driving systems of the future.

Currently, the chipmaker has partnerships with 14 car makers, from Volkswagen Group subsidiaries like Audi and Porsche, to BMW and Mini, to Peugeot and Tesla.

Why can't you have a 300W chip in a car? There's plenty room...

A GPU company putting chips into cars with a focus on things like self driving technology is news as far as I am concerned. I would never have EXPECTED nVidia/AMD to be putting GPU based solutions into cars in this sort of respect.

Lamborghini Aventador, powered by Nvidia. The way it's meant to be driven ! ;)

To be fair, one of the last things as a consumer I consider when buying a car, is who's chip is powering the display. Should boost their revenue substantially though, which could trickle into their PC side of the business.

I have to say booo to Lamborghini, not for using Nvidia, but for having a control panel that would look more at home on the front of a coolermaster case. it was surprisingly tacky.

If I owned a Lamborghini Aventador, the last thing on my mind would be a 'tacky' control panel. I'd be far too busy hurtling around the south of France at 200mph with my Super Model wife sat beside me, whilst nibbling truffle coated beluga caviar from her ample bosom. ;)

What? You don't do that already? Peasant :D

Intel, ARM, AMD, and Nvidia have been putting chips inside Cars and any number of different things for a very long time.

Why is this suddenly big news?

Really Humbug

It was an interesting article that was only put up yesterday, if this had of been about AMD hardware you wouldn't of said a word.

Indeed. It's called passive aggressive trolling. He says enough to denigrate the opposition but not enough to get the mods to spank him.

From a self-driving perspective, I'd have thought AMD will have an edge over Nvidia due to them having server-class ARM chips, whereas Nvidia (to my knowledge) are only going after consumer-class with ARM.

I could be totally wrong, but I'd assume that self-driving cars would have a higher class of circuitry than what goes in a phone/tablet.

Not here to score points for one team or another, but AMD have/had a lot of embedded projects for years, including military and aviation. The certification for these doesn't happen overnight, nor in the time between a traditional design-tape out. I imagine (or hope) self driving cars would have similarly robust testing and certification for OBCs

This is where I was coming from yeah.

I had heard AMD even do the embedded solutions for high-security cash machines and whatnot, whereas I am unaware of anything like that Nvidia does. So as I say, I assume AMD will have an edge for self-driving car solutions specifically, unless Nvidia create some new products and get certified.

This.

He's probably just a little mad AMD's biggest acheivement is having their GPU's in already outdated consoles one of which is so poor I wouldn't even have it for free.

Wasn't the PS4 the fastest selling of all time? (launch) to be fair, its a decent achievement to have your GPU in all current gen consoles even if they are weak (compared to PC :o)

Cheer up hummy, AMD had their own model decades before Nvidia.

Its takes up as little space as the Nvidia and useless less power, well actually zero electricity but requires hand power from a pet monkey you keep in the boot/trunk.

The down side is you need to feed it and it poops all over the place.
