NZ Earthquake

What's the deal with repair costs to your property guys? Do you have insurance or will the government pay?

Part of your premiem is paid to a government commission that covers the damage I believe:

Just to let ya know MinstaDave that I spoke to friends in West Melton about 30 minutes ago and their power had just come back on so your parents might have theirs as well :)

Cheers dude!

If you have insurance then it's all handled via the Earthquake Commission other than a $200/£100 excess. If you don't then you can apply for grants but there isn't an official process in place at the moment. Luckily we fall in the first category, we've got the house being inspected in a few days so hopefully it's still structurally sound. We are due for 130kmh gales tonight so I guess we'll find out soon!

Some photos of the damage (not taken by me).

...the only real claim to fame for Darfield before now is a really great bakery :D
Hmmm they do make great pies around there :D

Seriously, glad to hear you got through it without too much loss. We know a couple of families who have had to abandon their homes (both in the Avonside area).

I had a terrible sleep last night. Kept waking up with a start and just lying there waiting for something to happen. At about 1am I woke and lept out of bed into the hallway before I was aware that nothing was wrong. Just edgy nerves I guess.

The kid's school has been pretty badly damaged. All schools are closed until Wednesday for now - but we're thinking the kids may need to be relocated for the time being. The church which I pictured yesterday is coming down tomorrow as it's now structurly unsafe. I went back to take pictures today and the whole area has been closed off. Other pictures on Facebook show the damage has worsened in the last 24hrs.

I'm still trying to find out if I'm needed at work tomorrow. I work about 20 miles north of the city and there are concerns that the rain due in that area tomorrow could pose a risk.

Here's a couple of local news sites. If you can get past the dramatic reporting then they have a couple of decent picture galleries.

No damage to us thankfully. It seems to be pockets of damaged areas. The houses around the school all suffered, but we're half a mile away and are fine.

There are a few closed roads. The first picture I posted is our main route into town so we're going a longer way round for now. There is also some surface flooding in areas from broken mains. Other roads are just uneven. To their credit the council already has contractors working on the main roads and at this rate we should have a sense of normallity within a few weeks.

The suspension in the car is still getting a good workout. You wouldn't want to be cruising if you've lowered your ride too much. Here's another main road that suffered only a little damage.

Spoke to my folks this morning, power is back on but have had to evacuate the house, lots of structural damage, chimney has almost fallen off and gale force winds are threatening to help with that process.
