OcUK ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 512MB. How Good is it

It's much faster than your current card, it's single slot and should be relatively quiet, you should be able to control the fan speed in software anyhow.

I'm doing exactly the same upgrade. An OcUK 3850Pro 512Mb from a 7600GT. It'll be here on Monday so I'll let you know how good it is if you want? However, from the picture it looks single slot but desheperd from these forums got this when he bought his:
http://www.triplex.com.tw/english/pr...ati/hd3850.htm
Which is dual slot cooling solution. It appears to be a zalman-type flower cooler so I'd expect low noise. With a BIOS unlock and a pencil mod, you can get the core @ ~1Ghz - which is what I'll be doing when I get mine(if the cooler is good enough)

Hey. That's cool. I'm doing the exact same thing too. Mine should be with me by Tuesday, perhaps Monday if I'm lucky.

I'm going from a 7600GT to the OcUK ATI HD 3850.

I decided it was a better purchase than the 8800GT. Obviously the 8800GT is a much quicker card, but for me - with a 19" monitor - this was a better value, more sensible choice. I'm hardly a "hardcore" gamer either, I just enjoy a few hours of gaming over the weekend.

I'll let you know how it goes Humax, too, two opinions won't hurt. :)

Nice one mate. i think we have some kind of club going here :D. where all going from a 7600GT to the OcUK ATI HD 3850.:D

Yeah, the 'Bang for Buck Club' then maybe the 'Value Crossfire Club' after the price drops.....
Also, have you both seen the link I posted? Yesterday I thought we could be getting GDDR4 versions if you read the spec the way I did. I took it as 256=GDDR3 and 512=GDDR4, same goes for the 3870XT. That is assuming that we get the triplex para-souls card. I doubt this is correct however, as desheperd has already got his and says according to google, it's GDDR3 qimonda.

Yes, the one in the OcUK web page seems to be a generic 38xx image and probably should have the subtitle "library footage" added! The one I got looks nothing like this and *is* double slot ... takes two slots in case + its cooler will definitely stop anything goin into next slot even if you removed the extra metal from the end plate! I think this has happened before with OcUK cards being shown with an image that is different from what the eventual card looks llike.

N.b. the possibiliyt I raised that it might used GDDR4, given the 256/512, DDR3/DDR4 entries on the triplex spec + fact that card looked very similar to a Unika 3850 card that uses GDDR4 and is made by triplex turns out not to be the case ... the card i got uses qimoda GDDR3 chips.

Also, as for pencil mods ... I think this card is also not a direct copy of the ATI reference design thus any mods may need modding!

As for noise ... seems to be silent so far ... in fact only thing I've noticed is a very quiet fan sound (probably the CPU fan!) and a slight clicking noise which after a bit I realised was the disk heads moving ... smething I'd not really heard for a bit!

yeah should be about 3 or 3.5 (even more?)times as good considering peeople were saying it was 2 times as good as the x1950 pro.

Another "interesting" thing is that various system spec progs claim that I have 1GB of graphic memory with this (512MB) card ... noticed in the ATI catylist control centre it describes it as 1GB memory with "hypermemory" ... I thought hypermemory was the scheme to use system mem for graphics for low end cards .... or is it standard ATI method which would only affect the 3850 if all 512MB of on card RAM were in use?

Also, I've been trying to run various 3DMarks to see how my system compares to before (with 6800LE - unlocked to 12/6) ... but apart from 3dMark01 all the others 03/5/6 seem to hang on after displaying the splash screen while chewing up 95% of my CPU!

Thats something to do with how it reads the system info with these graphics cards. My 3850 does the same. A bit of googling offered the info that if you start 3Dmark using -nosysteminfo on the command line then itll bypass the scan and work fine.

It worked fine on my system using that at least. Hope it helps you too.

i'm thinking or ordering one of these cards, my psu is a antec 380watt the 12v rail is rated at 18a but i noticed the you have to have a 6 pin pci power connector which i'm sure mine doesn't have, do you think my psu will run it and can you get some kind of adapter to convert to a 6 pin pci.
the rest of my system is a E6400 with 4gb ram with only one sata HD :)
