I wouldn't call SKL-X redundant, maybe the lower core count models but you can't buy a Coffee Lake CPU with more than 6 cores.
However the 7820X is kinda pointless for gaming also compared the CFL, while is pointless for anything non gaming at it's price, compared to Ryzen.
Wrote few weeks back that 7900X is the only CPU that makes sense in the X299 lineup.

Explain why? It is obvious that a 6c12t coffeelake CPU will eat into skylakex lower end. So again explain why you think this is 'dumb'? As yet you have offered nothing.
If its purely for gaming id be inclined to agree. However, after running the 7820X for a few week I've noticed a huge performance uplift over my old 6850K. I'd be interested to see 7820K @ 5Ghz Vs 8700K @ 5Ghz to see what the difference would be, if any at all.
I personally don't agree 7900X is the only CPU that makes sense on X299, as you should be buying the CPU based on your requirements. I do have a 7900X on route though, as my 7820X was only a temporary solution but it I found it very helpful for my testing and its validated the 7900X is the best for my usage case.

to be fair the oem 7740x is now £219. Only the retail one is more expensive.
when looking at gaming benchmarks ie 7800/7820 vs 7700 the 7700 is the clear winner but 7740 trades blows with 7700 and beats it sometimes , to be honest if I hadn't already had a z270 board I would have gone 7740 instead of the 7700k.
I think the 7740 is a viable option to someone wanting a good gaming cpu with an upgrade path and upgrade options open to them.

when you click on link it shows Core i7-7740X 4.3GHz (KabyLake X / Basin Falls) Socket LGA2066 Processor - OEM £278.99 , maybe its an issue with the site or price has gone back up ,,
as linked to in an earlier post in this thread you can pick up retail boxed version for £239.94 , i'm tempted myself as that's £35 quid cheaper then a 7700k just the price of motherboard puts me off

If anyone actually bought one of these they are going to be well miffed that you then lowered the price a few days later.

Why would you buy a 4 core i5 though when they just released a 6 core one?
