And
It's a great shot, but it could do with a little love in post. Some contrast and shadows tweaks and a touch of sharpening really improve this for me.

Lovely clarity, timing and composition. A great shot.

A really well timed shot with a good composition my only comment would be a bit of PP will help to give it some more boost.

bam0
Well caught and nicely framed. A touch of contrast in post would improve it, as you're shooting into the sun.

A great action shot that is framed well and captures the moment. I would have liked to see the distance the skier is from the ground to give us a sense of scale though.

A really superb action sports shot and a good white balance.

braz2kuk
It's an OK shot, but it's not artistically or technically interesting. The selective colouring does little to remedy this.

The shallow DOF has worked well to isolate your subject but I'm not sold with the B&W conversion and find the image quite flat overall.

A good shot with a very shallow DOF that highlights the focus, but overall it is a little boring on subject and the selective colouring is not adding much.

capdegat
Nice and sharp, and well taken - just a shame the bird is looking away.

Lovely crisp shot that would have been much improved with some eye contact.

A superb shot and the moment captured is oddly interesting but you still feel that the bird should be looking into the camera.

chet84
That's a cracking shot.

Nothing to say except thanks for entering such a fantastic shot.

A fantastic scene well captured.

Clown
Well framed and nicely shot. Like the processing.

I like the idea but feel your subject is lost in the overall image. A much closer viewpoint is needed to convey the tension and add impact.

I really like the processing but feel that the actually subject is being swallowed up by the open composition.

cokecan72
The birds feel somewhat lost amongst the confusion of the trees. Like where you were going with it, though.

Once again, another image where the subject has become lost in the scenery for me. A flock of birds is a good concept but how do you convey that interestingly is the problem.

The actual flight aspect of the shot has been swamped by the background, it is a difficult subject to get close enough to truly capture the flock in action.

Derek_W
Good catch. Not entirely sure the B&W processing adds anything to it, though.

A lot of grain in the image which seems out of place for the subject and theme. The B&W conversion is always going to divide opinion and for me it doesn't work with the theme.

A nice choice for the theme, although I am not sure the grainy BW conversion works for the subject.

Devrij
It is indeed 'in flight', but it doesn't grab my attention I'm afraid. Would you want it on your wall?

As a flock of birds there needs to be more to keep the eye interested. Overall the shot lacks contrast and really needs a boost for added impact.

It’s got the theme but lacks in technicality and Impact.

DJ_Switch
Not sure I'm really getting the connection to the theme. Can’t say the shot does anything for me - sorry.

I can see what you are getting at and it's a great idea but I don’t think you have nailed it by shooting a car in front of you. Turn the camera around and shoot yourself driving in a getaway - that is the shot!

I can’t connect this to the theme and as an image I find it is over powered by the oncoming headlights.

drunken fool
Nicely framed, sharp but with the right amount of rotor blur. Like it.

A good capture with lots of detail to examine. Seeing the pilot flying adds that extra bit of interest.

Great shot, sharp and good detail captured.

englishpremier
Simple. I like it.

If you are going to use B&W then it needs to add to the image or story. Here I can't see why it was used so it detracts for me.

My only comment is I think this would look better with the plane against a blue sky.

engstrom0304
Nice shot. I love red kites. Good sharpness and DoF with the others oof in the background.

A cracking shot! Well done on capturing a wonderful image. It's sharp on the main bird and you have a three more fading into the distance to draw the eye. Top stuff.

Fantastic shot, great moment well captured.

feriso
OK, but it doesn't wow me - a little simple perhaps?

A nice shot but I feel that the image has been over sharpened and the background has become very distracting as a result.

The background distortion is rather distracting.

GSXRMovistar
Nice fun image, but doesn’t quite fit the theme exactly for me.

Lovely image that is simple and works well to convey the theme.

Nice image but weak on theme.

Guitarman0
Nice focus on the bird in the middle, but the image doesn't grab me. The vignette is a little ott I think.

A good action shot caught just at the right time. I'd be tempted to play around with the crop to remove the distracting elements of bird parts though.

The vignette is over powering and bird limbs are at the picture end need cropping out.

lunawolfy
Not particularly interesting technically or artistically, I'm afraid. Could do with a little love in post processing, though it’s not going to make it striking.

The bird is sharp and in focus so you have done well to pan the camera and capture it in flight. The background is not the best though and does little to enhance your shot i'm afraid.

This one really does nothing for me.

Nexus
Good interaction, but the image is a touch soft and you need to watch out for the contrast.

It's a nice image but as he's landed is the owl in flight? Regardless, I like it and your DOF is spot on here. A nice shot.

A good shot but the blown highlights are distracting.

oOStevieOo
Good silhouette of the bird, but the oof branches really detract from the impact.

The background is quite cluttered and framing the bird centre looses impact, but a good effort overall.

If it wasn’t for the trees clipping the scene it would be a much stronger shot.

Red.5ive.Oh.
Well that's different! Fun, but I can’t say it looks particularly well put together.

A hard one to judge as we are moving from photograpy into graphic design for this entry I'm afraid. All the elements work in your image but each has not been created from a photograph.

This kind of goes beyond the realms of photoshopped images and more in to graphics work and looks a bit amateurish, fun but still weak on theme.

Wedge
Fun image, but I don't think you’ve nailed the vapour trails.

Hats off to your creative thinking on this one. Top marks for matching the shadows on the figures bodies to the light in the scene and making the composting look solid.

Ha great fun image, I feel your shadows should be a little longer with the low winter sun.

wildman
Watch the highlights on the birds! It's a bit busy with all the birds - a bit confusing down at the bottom.

I think you were on the right track and had lots of subjects but the final shot is chaotic and hard to pick out a focus point.

Chaos ensues! Other than the blown highlights it’s not a bad shot and on theme.

Genuinely forgot I'd entered last months comp :o I realised the B&W / grain might mark me down but I fancied a slight change to my usual footy shot. Went for the grain to add to the dirty / grime style of lower division scottish football :p

Think as soon as everyone saw Chets entry, we knew that would win. Superb shot.

Thanks for the comments judges :)

I did think Chets was going to win it.
Well done!

I did umm and arr about whether to use another shot which was a bit more appropriate to the theme, as it was something more in flight, but I liked this shot so went with it regardless.
The softness was actually a creative choice, I was playing around with it and felt it gave something 'magical' to their interaction. The original is razor sharp. The highlights are only just blown around the top of it's wing, it's a very white bird.

Congratulations Chet :P

I never came last! Excellent, that was my aim for this month. As long as my shots get better I'll be happy, feeling happier about this months entry although the more I look at it the more worried I get :(

Great shot and well deserved winner - prolly the highest score I've seen; suprised mine was so bad but I see what you say - background didn't bother me... poo :(

Well done Chet. I had some much cleaner shots of some birds like 3 days after the deadline, so gutted! I think I may have to put a bit more time into these comps instead of just picking a snap that fits :roll eyes:

Day after the headline I spent an hour or so shooting the Great American Sea Eagle. Now those were some pics...
