Hello,

I am fairly new to this forum, and thought I would ask something that has had me over for the last week. I appologise if this is supposed to be in the Overclocking part of the forum, but I believe it is more relevent to memory.

I have:
GA-P35C-DS3R F2 Bios
E2140 @ 2960hz (8x370) 1.3975v
2x1GB OCZ PC6400 RAM Platinum
8800 GTS 640
620W Corsair

I have pushed the E2140 to near its limit (FSB wall is 377hz, its stable at 373, just wound it down to 370hz to be safe). This is 12hr orthos stable.

The problem is this. When testing I ran the RAM at 1:1, @ 2.1v and 5,5,5,15 Timings (motherboard default). So the ram is underclocked essentially:

When I change the timings to 4,4,4,12 @ 2.1v orthos fails in 5min.
When I up the DDR voltage to 2.2v windows doesn't boot, it just loops!
When I take out 1 stick, and run 4,4,4,12 orthos is fine @ 2.1v
When I replace this 1 stick with the other @ 4,4,4,12 orthos is fine too!
Moved the ram across into the next slot - same problem.

So it doesn't look like any one of the two sticks of ram that are faulty, it just won't be stable with both sticks in at the tighter timings.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I haven't run the dos memory program yet, but it does look like the RAM is causing the instability, since this is the only thing that changes. Anyone have any thoughts on what to do? Is this a motherboard problem?

Thanks!

is this the ram: OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

I asume that you've put the ram into the matching colors on the motherboard to run double chanel, set your timings maual to 4-4-4-15 @ 2.0v

if this doesn't work, let your memory run the lowest overclock above the 800 mark at the same volt and timings. could help

Thanks the RAM, yes. I will clock it back down to 4,4,4,15 (instead of 4,4,4,12) and to a rate of 740hz and try 2.0v. I think I have tried this however.

And also, yes, they are in the corresponding coloured ddr slots on the machine, so it is in double channel mode.

And if it doesn't run at stock speed of 800 Mhz, better RMA it. Probaly some kind of problem.

Will the CPU run at 400x7?

i know its 2800hz, which is less than where it is running currently, but if there is an FSB wall @ 377 will it not just hang?

just try or set your system on auto with memory you can choose on 800 Mhz. but normally should run at 740 without problems.

Right, Thanks for your help with this one. The problem was the voltage. For some reason this ram was unstable at anything above 2.0v (which is where it is now). It is now running 4,4,4,15 @ 888mhz. Just can't push it to 2.1v, which is odd....

Sometimes, a fan bridge over the ram keeps it cooler, depends on ram what temps they can take. I've got a 2 fan bridge over the ram to keep the geil ram cool there it requires a lot of voltage to run at 900 Mhz, have to put 2.25v over it.
