So... what would be the real world difference between this and the 32nm ones ?

Considering its the same sandforce controller, i doubt you would see any realworld difference in speeds ?

Theoretically, 22nm should be cheaper to produce - though not necessarily quicker, though this cost saving doesn't seem to have been passed to the consumer here...

They seem around the same cost as the old drives £/GB, but no faster. Shame.

Indeed, I was expecting these 25nm to a lot cheaper and hopefully reduce the cost of the 32nm ones :\

right tried to buy one went and put in ocukxmas and it says 5% off but nothing about free delivery, its asking me for £8 to ship a tiny SSD????

could someone clarify that people from northern ireland dont get free shipping and instead just get the 5% off?

i suspect your going to tell me that we are exempt from the offer as you have shafted us every single time with free forum delivery :/

couriers charge more to ship there don't they? presumable that's why.

Hmm, Royal Snail don't. I think since they are considered mainland UK I didn't think they are allowed to charge more? Maybe that only affects Royal Snail...

Thats the only benefit and we're not seeing it? Shame like you said... Gibbo! ;):p Make me buy a 80gb!

50gb also near enough same price as 60gb was?

On xbitlabs they say that smaller transistor sizes for ssd's will increase the error rate and reduce performance (due to increased ecc), look at the graph at the top of this link:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/flash-ssd-forecast_5.html

...switch from 30nm to 20nm tech process for NAND flash. Alas, the smaller tech process will worsen the consumer properties of flash memory cells. The service life is reduced from 3000 to 2000 or an even lower number of rewrites (we are talking about the MLC memory type here as the other types won’t switch to the 20nm tech process). The charge retention time is going to decrease, too, but not far below 5 years, so that’s unimportant for SSDs which are used on a regular basis.

The size of a data page may remain the same at 8 kilobytes but the manufacturers will hardly be able to keep the raw bit error rate on the same level. As the tech process gets thinner, the interference of adjacent cells grows up, the number of electrons in the floating gate is decreased, and the leakage currents in the slim insulators get higher. All of this calls for more ECC bits and for faster ECC processors. The existing 24 ECC bits for 1 kilobyte of data won’t be sufficient for long. The 20nm generation of chips will have 80 or even more ECC bits per 1 KB of data. Besides, the controller developers suggest adaptive ECC which would be able to occupy memory pages intended for data.

If you buy an ssd you are probably going to be using it a lot but a charge retention time of 2 years is surprising, you wouldn't expect your data to become corrupted while the drive is switched off. Is this something which happens with mechanical hdds?

Really tempted to get a 60gb vertex 2e but not sure if I should wait longer. In the same xbitlabs article they say ssds won't get to 1$/gb until 2012. Any price drops expected shortly?

I was thinking of buying the 80GB version of these but are we saying that the Vertex 2E would be a better buy as opposed to the Vertex 2??

They're the same except for capacity and overprovisioning.

Be aware that the newer 25 nm models are a bit slower, have a generally reduced lifetime and will have ~5 GB space less than advertised compared to the 34 nm models (a 25 nm 120 GB Vertex 2E will have 115 GB = 107 GiB rather than 120 GB = 111 GiB).

Many thanks DragonQ ;) Will probably go for a Vertex 2E instead.
