Yo!

I am -by no means- an elite photographer, but I do like to take the odd photograph. I recently purchased the F50FD, and, sadly, have found that dark areas of photographs (such as my PC case, or my TV) are populated by an insane number of hideous artifacts.

Now, like I said before, I am not a big photography guy (home cinema is more my thing) and I have no idea what most of the settings on this particular camera do. I assume that at least one, or a combination of these settings will reduce the number of artifacts.

As you can see, it appears that my venerable Silverstone TJ03 has been infected with some strange skin condition.

Many thanks to any kind gentlemen who respond.

I dont know the camera but it could be trying to compensate for a dark scene by a faster ISO speed - which on some cameras has the effect you describe. Try increasing the light or shutter speed.

I see.

I have posted an example. I will attempt to increase the shutter speed.

I don't see the problem? Light from your pc screen and ambient light has been reflected off the slightly shiny surface. It looks a bit noisy but that's only due to the ISO on the small camera, if you can set that lower it'll do its thing, but you'll need to rest the camera on something as it'll get blurrry with the longer shutter speed.

Yeah, your camera's running at an ISO of 800 which is quite high for a compact.

It's just what it automatically does to compensate for a lack of light and no flash.

Nothing to worry about - my sony f717 prosumer (no slouch either) did exactly the same in a dimly lit room.

Edit: If you did wanna change the settings then you could if the camera had a manual setting. That way you could lower the ISO to around 200. Only problem then is that your shutter speed would be slower resulting in either a handheld shot (and a blurry image to boot) or the use of a tripod.

There's also another alternative and that is to use software to tidy up any noise in an image.

I use a program called 'neat image' that works quite well:

using software to remove it works, but ideally you should remove the noise at source. Lower ISO will do it.

If using the flash, the F31FD defaults to ISO800. I don't know how much manual control the F50 will let you have though.

The F50fd has exactly the same controls as the F31, however it is WELL KNOWN to have aweful image quality/noise as you describe all due to its 12mp sensor. The best compact cam is the F31fd or 2nd best if you cannot find it, is the F40fd, although this has less manual control its image quality is still pretty good due to relativly fewer pixels and a larger sensor size than other cameras.

Its about pixels to sensor size ratio as far as quality goes
