Odd MOT Advisory

Just took the Corsa in for its first MOT which luckily passed with flying colours - apart from an advisory about tread depth on the front tyres. The car has only done just over 11k miles and last time I read the depths about three weeks ago were around the 5mm mark. The garage seems to be implying that the tyres are scrap when the depth gets to 4.1mm. Checked the DOT etc. websites and legal limit is still shown as 1.6mm. Obviously would change prior to that anyway, but a bit puzzled where the garage is getting its idea from (not as if they stand to benefit financially from a purchase of new tyres). 2mm or so of useable tread probably = around another 7-8k miles for fronts. In fact, I was probably more concerned the sidewalls might perish before the tread wore out!

Yes in the centre of the tread, not the sides and at a couple of locations around the width to get an average and look for flat spots.

Can't vouch for what the garage looked at. Will double check tomorrow but as I said was expecting to get another 12 - 18 months out of them!

It's a advisory. if you do 12k mile within the next year the tyre will need changing.

It's for people who just drive drive and drive, untill somthing break's, then throws a fit.

Seems a bit odd, perhaps the garage assume your a chump who only checks his car over every year?

On the invoice and sheet that accompanies the certificate.

Will just put it down to them being over cautious, I expect they do get people who never check the engine oil or tyre pressures/tread - must have thought they were dealing with a muppet! Normally check round the car at least once a fortnight, more frequently if the usage warrants it.

We used to advise tyre tread depths as a matter of course regardless of the actual depth just to keep the customer informed, still 5 mm all round? report them anyway.

The theory was that by keeping folk informed they would have a better idea of when to get them done so we wouldn't have to deal with replacing a dozen or so racing slicks each week.

Didnt work out as some people believed that we were trying to con them into a set of tyres.

The recommendation is to change tyres when they reach the 3mm mark. With less than 3mm tread left, the tyre is no longer optimal and provides poorer grip. If you've got to 4mm within a year of purchasing the car, there is a good chance that they'll be below the legal minimum in a year anyway.

People like my mum, who still won't listen.

"Mum your car needs servicing"
"Your car, needs servicing"
"Mother dear, have you had your car serviced yet?"
"You really need to get your car serviced, it doesn't sound very healthy"

"Oh no my cars broken again, boo hoo, it's just one thing after another"

Then, when its for sale:

And the **** brigade wont stop calling :D

I get an advisory every time stating 'Adjustable suspension fitted'.

Will look a bit bad whn I come to sell it and the wad of MOT certs has an equally large wad of yellow advsory slips!
