i admit - i am a complete NOVICE/NUMPTY when it comes to cooking and no one i know uses a slow cooker to do a casserole.

my question is this -
do i just add a bit of water and frozen vegatables to it, bit of precooked beef, and some oxo to it and leave it for for 9hrs?

:o

i cando spag bol no problem but casserole is a nice idea but i get lost by it.

9 hrs? lol

add your ingredients, add water or stock until just covered then stick it in the oven on gas 3 or 4 for about 2 hrs

Some people brown the meat before adding it so you get a better tasting gravy (well my gran does). But yeah you don't cook it all the way through before adding it. Use really cheap and chewy meat, strangely it works and tastes the best when slow cooked.

I use mine do do a nice beef casserole, bang in the beef, oxo cubes and veg and switch it on before i goto work, when i get back the meat is nice and tender and melts in the mouth

Frozen veg? Precooked beef?

My god man! Do it properly!

This.

I'd seriously recommend a slow cooker. I've got a Morphy Richards and it is one of the best cookery items I have EVER bought. Chicken casseroles (thigh meat) with sweet potato, carrots, onions, tomato puree and chicken stock and home made dumplings are amazing! To make the dumplings I usually empy the slow cooker contents and put them into a casserole dish, put the dumplings on top and whack in the oven for half an hour.

Perfection.

Another option is to add dumplings towards the end and once cooked. remove the pot from the slow cooker and crisp the top under the grill :)

As above, chuck some stewing/braised steak into some stock with the chopped root veg and put on for a few hours. I'd say 9 would be too much, even for a slow cooker, 4 or 5 on medium should do it.

ive just got a slow cooket but not had a chance to try it yet

meant to be very easy, chuck it all in and come back 6-8 hours later

there are some basic rules about putting harder veg at the bottom and not overfilling it with liquid. etc.. (and never lifting the lid off whilst cooking)

but other than that just try it and see what happens

My mum bought me a slower cooker as a present years ago but I've never used it. Always seems more hassle to put things in it in the morning before work and get it cooking all day than it does to just spend 30 minutes in the evening cooking a meal..

you know you don't have to stand and watch it all day? ;)

But is anyones meat precooked or is it ok to add frozen beef pieces to it?
Don't wanna make myself ill.

How long can I keep fresh chicken in the fridge? Couple of days or 24hrs like when you defrost it?

:p

It means I have to get up earlier in the morning to chop veg and meat etc to put in it and it only ever takes me about 30mins tops in the evening to cook a meal anyway!

I do all the veggies/stock for mine before I go to bed - pop it in the slow cooker and pop the lid on. In the morning I quickly brown the meat and then for a few mins then chuck it in the slow cooker and switch on. I can brown the meat in the time it takes to make my toast.

But is anyones meat precooked

As above - I brown my meat - keeps the juice sealed in and meat moist - stops the stock being too fatty as well.
