Odd smell in new house :(

I've never really liked the idea of air purifiers, however it seems baking soda may be a good alternative to onions. Since it works great in fridges one would assume the same would be the case in a full room

Fabreeze does neutralise smells, that's how it works :) get one of those scented oil burning candle things and pour some fabreeze into the bowl as that evaporates into the room it'll fill everything a lot easier than spraying :)

Nothing worse than moving into a new place that smells funky is there :(
 
Fabreeze is basically glue, it's molecules bind to airborne particles, when they get too heavy to remain in suspension they fall to tue ground where in theory you Hoover them up.
 
In all seriousness, it probably is haunted in some way. If it's not a ghost, it could be a spiritual resonance of some kind. The house next door to my mother's still has it after someone died there many years ago. It's immovable.
 
If it's wool carpet that will have lanolin smell on it for weeks - after a couple of moths it will pass. The house will need airing out for several days if possible. Try locking your windows open a little bit if you're happy to do so (security and all that).

Otherwise, time should cure it. If you want to try burning something to reduce the whiff rather than nasty chemical carp in fabreeze, just use an oil burner with water and some essential oil - geranium is strong and floral and should reduce the nasty niffs, there are heaps to choose from. Burn this and/or perhaps some Nag Champa insence and it will help too.
 
Is everything new after the renovation? No curtains that haven't been washed for 10 years or anything along those lines? Could be something basic like that.

This. We recently had a conservatory painted and the smell was really strong - the onions did the trick although it took a few days still.

I think the OPs real problem isn't paint though - its the fact that the previous tenant must have been a smoker. If whoever renovated just painted over walls and ceilings without washing them thoroughly first then I think the smoke smell will remain for a while.

Some good suggestions though about burning candles etc. Neutrodol is another air freshner that neutralizes smells.
 
100% your fault for not getting the necessary information beforehand. It's amazing the critical info that people don't bother to chase up.
