***Offical Game of Year Contender Dragons Dogma***

PSN ;) upto lvl 27 atm though my hired pawns are around 32, 33

i had a long slog to get to that camp it was about 2am when i met the other thing :D (after many battles with other beasties)

I'm realizing that pawn information is no where near a gimmick its necessary lol. My pawn at the beginning of this actually said "hey we should hire a guide" for this quest (attack fortress quest wyrm). Its a bit hit and miss though. Sometimes my pawn will have been somewhere before so i think great lead on but they dont. Other times they will run off to where the chest/secret switch is.

i've got a buggerload of money though 200k (no exploiting either)

Has anyone made anything worthwhile with the crafting / combining that they could share?

I don't have a clue what I'm doing other than making a slightly better plant curative!

ive made a couple of things which i found helpful. Ogre and cyclops kinda scrolls which when you use give your pawn increased knowledge on how to fight them :) I forget what the ingredients were though lol

the really helpful potions are the perfume and balmy stuff (which heals entire party) i forget what the combination is though.

Week off work next week, finally time to get this game! If this is anything like Dark Souls I can see myself not being peeled away from the screen for a long time.

R0B 75, I have just hired Kanar, level 28 fighter (nice shield!) Time to clear out the quarry pass methinks! (get in there Kanar! :D )

I am level 24 atm (thought I was 25) so will do some leveling as I have the afternoon off.

My pawn is Sansa, Mage / Sorcerer atm, although you might want to wait til I sort her gear out (can't seem to find decent mages clothing).

If you have any requests as to what skills you would like a mage or sorcerer to come with then I'll change them accordingly. At the moment she has this mental lightning whip spell which is great for stunning bosses whilst you climb up them.

She also has a healing spell and a high level fire affinity buff, as well as the standard fireballs and lightning strikes.

Its better :p though different games..

Dark Souls and Demons Souls are vv good but the enjoyability for me :p wasnt really in the joy of combat it was surviving to lvl and upgrade with weapons etc. The online play and coop and pvp is brilliant admittedly.

I just find more fun in the combat of Dragons Dogma i guess a big part of that is that you play as a team...a party of adventurers in true good ole Dungeons & Dragons fashion :D

The pawn AI makes this game tbh..outclasses every other games NPC AI i can think of atm

Sounds just like what I've been waiting for tbh :) while I doubt nothing will come close to the bliss of P&P games with friends, it sounds like the AI really does provide a unique experience. I think the enjoyment of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls was also partially due to that feeling of dread and horror you had from not knowing what was around the next corner, or knowing that any moment a player or AI controlled mob could undo vast amounts of progress you've made *shudders to think about Izalith*. But from what I've heard from friends playing the game, night time and insufficient preparation brings its own feeling of terror.

R0B 75, Kanar is doing you proud! :D

Apologies for the poor quality iphone pics...

Kanar (on the left) begins the engagement, distracting the brute whilst Sansa (on the right) prepares her lightning whip. It seems to like women a lot....

On the defensive, its getting mad now...

LOL its trying to run away with your pawn to do god knows what!

Victory! (Said in a Johnny Drama, Entourage Viking Quest voice)

1 down, 2 to go... :D

Loving it! The fight reminded me so much of the troll fight in the Mines of Moria LOTR 1. Epic! Especially when it starts going beserk!

Nimdok you won't be disappointed with this game, it is soooo much fun!

I think the terror feeling is there, especially when you first discover a cave and have no clue what lies in wait...the game doesn't hold your hand and prevent you from going somewhere that you are going to get your ass kicked.

Compared to the other big great open world RPGs:

Skyrim - As much as I wanted to love Skyrim, and I did put a fair few hours into it, it felt the same as Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout NV that I had played to death before it, and although they have tried to sort out the level scaling its still there. I got tired of it very quickly.

Dark Souls - I absolutely loved Dark Souls, the combat mechanic is near perfect and again its a very difficult game. I would not say Dragons Dogma is a better game, its a different beast. As Surfer said, the survival aspect of Dark Souls is fantastic, Dragons Dogma has the party mechanics and fantastic pawn AI that really make it feel fresh.

Sure this game has its problems, and there are things it very nearly gets right but not quite.

This game is begging for a co-op option, controlling your pawn in someone elses game would be absolutely perfect.

The skills assignment options is a little lacking, I think they could have done a better job with the button assignments, a wheel system slo-mo aka The Witcher 2 would be great for choosing elemental buffs for example, rather than having one per face button, eating up your precious slots quickly.

Sounds even better than I thought! I loved the way games like Hunted: The Demon's Forge and the original Witcher handled dungeons and dark caves - where you literally couldn't even see your own feet unless you had a steady supply of torches or other items to illuminate your surroundings. Just makes it feel so much more awesome :D and I'm glad that the danger aspect is there in wandering into the unknown, makes it all the more thrilling (even if it means having my ass handed back to me). I guess in a sense the pawn sharing between friends could feel like co-op to some extent (most of my friends have named their pawns after their characters in MMOs for such reasons), really interested in seeing how it works myself :) The wait for tomorrow evening is going to be excruciating! But at least I know I've got Dragon's Dogma to come home to after a day of 1st line IT Support (can hopefully throw some 3rd line in there to break up the monotony) :D

Also, are most of you guys playing this on 360 or PS3? Will add whichever of you have it on 360 if you don't mind ^^

R0B 75 and me (gamertag McSniz) are on 360, Surfer is on PS3.

You are more than welcome to add me, my pawn will likely be level 30 by the weekend.

I would recommend hiring pawns 3-5 levels above you (this will cost you some rift crystals) so that they are still useful for a fair amount of adventuring.

Once they are 1 or 2 levels below you swap them.

soooo just about to go through the quarry, got out my lantern which then set me on fire, damn goblin had drenched me in oil i think hehe. this game is a masterpiece :)

i usually swap them out when they are same level or 1 above. However if you refresh them at the Rift usually they are a few levels higher again so you can take em back out.

Surprised there are so few people on here playing this tbh  RPG heaven!

Just released your pawn R0B 75 with a little pressie, then rehired her as you have leveled her up in the meantime.

Is there a quick way to refresh the pawns you have whilst you are in the rift rather than dismissing them / rehiring them?

My pawn Sansa should be level 29 / 30 now if you are interested!

I can make her Mage or Sorcerer (whatever you prefer). She has a fair few discipline points unspent at the moment if you have any requests for particular spells! :)

What Party combos have you guys been using?

Pretty much throughout been using

Mystic Knight
Fighter (on occasion Warrior)
Strider (pawn)
Mage

only spot i can drop is fighter if i wanted to have a sorceror in there. Cant drop mage as who would do the healing?

Unless Mystic Knight at some point gets Anodyne?

I'm currently using a level 34 mage as its always good to have a mage in the party. I might borrow your pawn next time I play. I like fire lightning and healing. The more the better.

Thanks for the gift :D

At the moment I am running with:

Mystic Knight (me)
Sorcerer (Pawn)
Fighter (Rob75s pawn)
Ranger (Random pawn)

I switch between mage and sorcerer for my pawn.

I always do miss the healing of the mage, but when I have plenty of curatives, or better yet if I have recently visited a healing spring with empty water flasks and filled them up, I can cope without.

A little tip, my pawns primary trait is medicant (ie mindful of the partys health and stamina). The healing spring flasks heal the entire party, very handy. I give my pawn about 10 of these when she is a sorcerer, and because she is medicant, heals the party pretty well.

The sorcerer is great when those big spells come out to play, the problem is they take forever to cast, so I need to protect her, and as you said no healing / ailment curing.

Decisions decisions!!! :)

Rob75, as a sorcerer, she has 3 high level lightning spells (including a lightning forcefield for the whole party, its awesome! :D), and 3 high level fire spells at the moment (meteor storm anyone?).

As I said about the healing, I could switch her back to mage if you like, she would lose the 2 big hitter spells, but would gain healing and a partywide defensive buff.

If you give her healing tonics that cure the whole team, she is fine without healing spells as a sorcerer. :)

Currently:

Ranger - Me
Fighter - My Pawn
Mage - Random
Warrior (I think, I haven't actually looked) - Random

Just found the healing spring incidentally.

Currently running with

Me - Ranger
Pawn - Mage
Random Pawn - Warrior
Random Pawn - Fighter

Seems to have worked well so far. Gonna try Mystic Archer once I've maxed Ranger.

If anyone on 360 fancies using a lvl 20 ish mage pawn - GT is Niroe ;)
