I can definitely appreciate how great it is to get a reading in 3 seconds, but that's still an awful lot for a very basic functionality pen.

Anyone got any pics from weekend bbqing?

Buy a thermapen, instant read, very accurate and reliable. Very high quality and even made in the UK. Not especially cheap, but absolutely worth the money, I wouldn't BBQ without one.

You can buy them directly from here - https://thermapen.co.uk/

There are some leftover mk3 models on offer at £36.

I got mine from there for £36, absolute bargain and really takes the guess work out of getting meat right. I couldn't be without it now!

I only threw a few burgers and a steak on the BBQ this weekend, nothing major. However I did try out Slims Pork Chop Express in Liverpool for a BBQ feast on Saturday and it was amazing, highly recommended! :D

Just ordered my Birthday present :D
WEBER® MASTER-TOUCH® GBS® 57CM - BLACK (FREE GBS® PIZZA STONE)

So my question now, is what charcoal should i be looking at? I'm thinking starting with a bag of Aussie Heat beads, any essential accessories I need, other than a chimney starter and a temperature probe?

Any suggestions on what to christen it with ? tempted to soo if i can pick up a rack of spare ribs and give them a nice low and slow :D

Good choice!

I used Lump Wood Charcoal with mine and it works very well for general grilling:-

Also Look to get a grill brush and good pair of tongs:-

I also got a cover for mine as it will be living outside:-

As far as briquettes go, you won't find better than heat beads. Must have accessories for me are - chimney starter, thermapen, wireless thermometer (either a maverick 732/733 or thermopro, don't go bluetooth as the range sucks) and a good quality wire grill brush.

If you're new to smoking, familiarise yourself with the snake method for low and slow cooks. Also don't worry about maintaining a precise temperature too much, it's going to vary in a kettle more so than a dedicated smoker.

And for wood chunks I recommend buying from Paul Goulden at http://bbqsmokingwood.co.uk/

Good purchase! :D I got mine a couple months ago and have used it most weekends since. I'll echo the above, Thermapen, Maverick 733 and chimney are good buys. I generally buy my lumpwood from Liverpool Wood Pellets and have found them to be decent and I've been using Hot Smoked for my wood chunks.

Today (well overnight for lunch tomorrow) is the first proper smoke of the year for me - packer brisket, 2.5kg pork ribs, two spatchcock chickens and maybe some pork shoulder.

Man, I saw a ProQ Frontier Elite 2nd hand but not much used on ebay the other day for £200, such a good price but just couldn't justify it as my current BBQ does me OK just about for smoking. One day though.

For those keeping track, the brisket is wrapped (@138f) and the pork is now in. The smoker was running @270 rather than my usual 225 but that's probably down to using more cocashells than normal.

Pics once it's all sliced and plated!
