*** Official 500m Rowing Challenge***

I was ready to give this a bash today, despite it being at the end of the session.

However, 49 seconds in, I must have been getting carried away because and the end of the stroke I went to bend my legs back in and the seat went forward but I did not :D I parked my bum on the row and wondered what the hell just happened. :o

It was quiet so nobody saw it but I was too busy laughing at myself to give it another shot. Lucky not to fall off! :o

Was on track to beat my time though so I might give it another go tomorrow, providing I can stay on!

Exactly the same happened to me recently, Sigma! Well, mine was a case of my bum went flying backwards, but I must've raised off the seat when I pushed off, as the seat remained in the forwards position!

Memo to self: Bring superglue to the gym next time.

Had another go, found it a bit hard to stay on at times, didn't feel as good as I did yesterday even though that was at the end of the session and this was after 10 minutes of warming up?

I'm also a bit confused about my total time... it said the 500m time was 2:05 but then the actual time was 2:03 and 515m rowed.

Either way it's an improvement and I didn't feel quite as ****ed as I did the first time but I need to sort my pacing out because I hit a wall at 1:55 and pretty much stopped.

Without seeing the screen I don't know for certain but I'd suspect the 2:05 to be the estimated time for 500m i.e. if you kept up that pace then you'd average 2:05 for the distance which suggests to me that you went out faster and slowed down towards the end? The easiest way round this is to go into the menus and set yourself a specific distance of 500m and row that, make sure the display is giving you the information you want and that's it.

Well done on the improvement though.

Yes, I misjudged it slightly.

Doh! Of course! That is what I did last time! Totally forgot, never mind. :o

Thanks. :) I haven't specifically been aiming to lower my time it just appears that my general fitness level is increasing so there is still a lot of room for improvement. I think yesterdays time would have been below 2 minutes.

hehe, didn't go too well this morning.

Don't usually do it after my gym session but forgot today hence the awful last 100m split :D Just wasn't happening today.

4 secs off my PB isn't THAT bad though.

(Sorry for quality, couldn't hold my hand still)

Anyone fancy having a go at the O'Neil fitness test?

http://concept2.co.uk/training/oneill_test

Basically you row flat out for 4 minutes to determine your base level aerobic fitness. The site has various charts so you can compare yourself to your level at a specific age and weight/sex category.

I do 2000m not flat out and average 4 mins 25 for 1000m so not great, probably average if I went flat out.

Plus the bigger you are the more advantage you have when it comes to rowing, me 5 foot 7 has no chance against someone that is 6 foot 5 ala Redgrave/Pinsent

What height it everyone?

That is why there is a weight adjustment factor - see here:

http://concept2.co.uk/training/guide/weight_adjustment

Basically if you weigh less that 77.27kg then your time is improved, and if you weigh more your time is worse.

I'm 92kg and can pull a 6:03 2k which becomes 6:17 when weight adjusted. So my weight adjusted 500m is actually 1:25.6 rather than 1:22.3 (this is taking the British conversion rather than American)

My height is 6'3" or 193cm in proper units
