***Official*** 9800GX2 thread (reviews and benches inside)

Keep it constructive guys. And Andeh, you've now called 9800GX2 buyers "mugs" in two diferent threads now, we get the point, you don't like it. Enough.

This thread is for genuine information and discussion.

so why exactly did you go from an 8800GTX to a 9800GX2 ?

What games can't you play at max settings? (Except Crysis)

I went from a 8800GTS 320 to a 9800GX2, thats a very large upgrade mate.

And great, awesome, Will and Loadsa have turned up to drag the thread into the gutter with comments they have already posted ten times in other threads. I think ill move to diferent forums.

Well it came this morning, never had any probs with CityLink despite their bad rep. Then i'd forgotten i'd lent my set of screwdrivers to a mate and had to wait till and hour ago to get them back. Heres some pictures of me fitting the GX2 into a Lian Li PC-7 Midtower.

Here it is in all its massive hulking £400 costing glory, with all the trimmings you get with it, including an HDMI cable:

Once my BFG 8800GTS 320 was taken out it left this hole, as you can see i had to move my raptor HDD down in the cage and slightly forward to make room for the new card:

Here it is installed, i had a bit of trouble getting it in but that was my own brains fault, and dont say anything about the cable management! I know its rubbish but Lian Li's are hardly designed well when it comes to cables:

Heres a shot of the 8 pin power cable adapter that comes with it. I want to say here that after the little spurt of histeria (sp?) surrounding the whole power cable thing, it was nice to see that the world hasnt in fact ended, and BFG had come through as expected. Very easy to install, decent quality connector:

Drivers installed fine, used Nasty File Remover, to clean out my old drivers.
First thing i did was check out Crysis. For some reason it didnt want to work on High settings, it was really sluggish and some textures were missing, ive no idea why. When set to Medium it was fine however and going from a 320 GTS to this was amazing. It was so smooth it makes me want to play it all the way through again, its like a totally new game. And the AA was sweet, i didnt really have the power to have it on before, but now the edges are so crisp and sharp, it makes the great graphics even more realistic. I had a peak of 60fps, a low of 25, and probably a medium of 45-50, which is absolutely fine for me.
Then i checked out TF2 and HL2, hardly the best games to test the GX2 out on, but both games saw 180+ fps average, it was mainly just to test that the card was working on a range of games.

Now to see how far it overclocks, ill do some playing about with Rivatuner and let you guys know how it went.

/putting fears to rest since five to five on a Wednesday afternoon.

Which drivers?

174.53

And ill do a 3Dmark06 tomorrow at work, ive got clan stuff to do in TF2 atm, [DoGs] clan > all! And youll have to tell me how Easyrider, ive not done that before.

Edit: @ Azza, 34-35 on both cores at idle, 55-58 at load. Not very good i know, tbh im thinking of getting another case with some better cable management. I dont really want to OC my E6600 further with those sort of load temps, when running Prime i saw them spike over 70 which im in no way happy with.

Edit2: Oh also, i dont know who said that the GX2 was the only card to not blow air out of the case leading to higher overall case temps, but your wrong, there is definately air coming out of the vent.

Might be that specific mobo tbh. Ive been playing a solid 40 mins of games on mine and i doubt the temps are goign to go out much more than they are now, and everything seems fine. Although i will admit the case temps have gone up 2 degrees, but i think thats to be expected from any card like this, wether it be the GX2 or the X2.

I'm taking it REALLY slowly with this overclock right now, owing to the fact theres not much info out there about how far you can push them and what happens if you do. So nothing ground breaking, just to show it can infact be overclocked i guess, there were some very stupid rumours before it came out that you would be able to OC the GX2 at all...

A little update guys, turned on my PC this morning and it refused to boot windows, once id told it to boot to previous working settings it started fine however, as far as i can tell it was the GX2 overclock that did it, looks like ill have to take it even more slowly than i was. So initial results suggest there aint much room for OCing these card, or maybe its just mine. Anyway im not stopping there, ill try to find what the max OC is.

(oh yeah, and you all need to be listening to this: http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/blimp/ )

@ Makunouchi - What are you using to OC this card? I find Riva Tuner does not work with it, even though you can increase the core clocks and that, it has no effect.

I was using Rivatuner, but i havent really tested it properly after OCing it so you might be right. Rivatuner definately works for the fan though, cos you can hear that increasing as you tweak it, so its not liek the card is locked or anything. Ill have to do some tests with 3Dmark tomorrow and see if youre right.

I really doubt it HighlandeR, apparently the card is exceptionally hard to take apart yourself, but i guess we might see some brands using diferent coolers in time.

As for overall noise its no more noisy than my old GTS, i cant hear it at alll, even after 2+ hours of Crysis. Ive manually turned the fans up due to overclocking it and wanting to be safe, so i can hear it slightly now, but thats not the cards fault.
