8GB RAM issues causing low fps

A friend and I have near identical machines apart from I have double the RAM at 8GB. Both ordered and installed new ATI HD 4890 cards and set Arma graphic options to the same. To cut a long story short he got 60fps constantly, I was getting 10-20 fps! If opened in 1680x1050 then all I got was black blocks everywhere.

This appears to be an issue mainly with ATI cards with 8GB. To get this working I had to add the -winxp line fix to the target shortcut although I understand this does not work with all machines. Seems crazy cutting your RAM in half so another option is to limit the amount of your RAM via msconfig to a higer number.

Not sure if this has been covered already - apologies if so. Since then it's been amazing :)

But do you now get the same FPS as your m8.

Has anyone done a test to see if taking 4 gig out and getting rid of the -winxp makes it any better.

I think I read on the Bis forums that the game doesn't like anything more than 4 or maybe it was 6Gb?. Can't remember, seems a bit daft though.

Well, I've had to resort to using the "endmission" skip level thingy again. Been suffering from the same "Instant death" bug on the Manhattan FUB level that I've read about over on the Arma forums. Can't do a thing with it and my only option was to try and restart the mission ( no guarantee that if I did that then once I was back to where I aborted from it wouldn't just do the same again ) or use the skip mission cheat. I suppose I can always go back and play them through again if the bugs get patched up at a later date.

First few missions played pretty flawlessly for me, last couple have been a complete nightmare as far as mission triggers and bugs go. Rather disapointed I have to say. :(

Clairvoyant/washo

Funny you should say that

Yesterday my 1st 4890 came and i tried arma2 and it was very good on higher seetings than i used with my 4870, then after i got low defied 3d and blackness for grass etc

I had been using different lines in the .exe But i removed them after installing 4890 with the drivers for it

So hence i got the crappy scenery etc, Not that it mattered but i removed and redid arma2

During or after i also added back my lines in the .exe , so i wrongly assumed it was vsync and aa settings in ccc lol

I too run 8gig of ram so i now know what was causing it and what to check in the furure ;)

Roll on ofp2 i'm looking forward to switching to n fro to save burnout :)

ps: the -winxp is this also the fix for crossfire issues in arma2 or will i need to use crysis in the .exe ??

Cheers

I do indeed get the same rates as him ie 60fps. I will check my graphics settings and confirm back. It is still not maxed out, though needs some collaboration :( Looks amazing, although I have been playing for 8 hours and not come across any enemy yet :p

I have read that someone limited it to around 7.5GB using msconfig and works fine. Not tested myself so cannot confirm atm.

Hi all im having trouble playing arma 2 on my rig just had a bios update at overclocker and now it wont play at the OC speed of 3.8Ghz but if i revert to optimal settings at stock 3.2Ghz there is no problem.

well i picked this up a few days ago, i like it but my laptop doesn't, heh.

having to run everything scaled back to low, normal or disabled where appropriate - haven't actually played the campaign yet, i'm just having fun in the armoury and the editor. can't wait for my new desktop build so i can get to enjoy it in all its proper graphical glory.

anyone recommend a cheap joystick that works well with arma2?

What FPS did you get with it all on low Kranix? I'll be running it on a very similar set up!:)

From what ive played of the demo, from what i can tell by using the default settings it recommended (High @ 1680x1050), the FPS seems fine, deffinately playable, but the stuttering is what annoys me, guess im gonna have to play around with the settings.

My Bad :P

Got my Xfx 4890 delivered yesterday

6:21pm earlier, i succumbed to hitting the by now on this week only :(

Gonna be crossfiring arma2 monday :)

Cheers for the link L33, and i must say thanks for the server too for us lesser mortals :)

Cheers

Guys, is there a "select all" key to select every member in your squad at once instead of having to manually press F1,F2,F3 and F4 all the time?.

Also, I read somewhere about a key combo that brings up a "minimap" on the main screen but can't recall what the key/keys were?.

"R CRTL M" will bring up a mini map
