***** Official Football Manager 13 Thread *****

A few things are really ****ing me off with this at the moment, because they're giving the opposition just about every goal... Why doesn't my keeper bother diving half the time when he's perfectly able to? Why don't my defence close down people even though I have told them to? Also they can't mark for **** and the opponents can run straight through them?

Also how do I get my players to mark corners properly... I've tried getting them to in the set pieces editor thing but the opposition just get away from their man easily, run in and score every time?

unfortunately its the way the game works, and has for ages.

gets me when i see one of my players make a mistake in the opponents half and i know its going to lead to a goal against us, cos the defenders are going to mess things up :(

I decided to resign as boss of Huddersfield after 6 seasons. I lifted the Premier League trophy 3 times and won the Capital One cup once. But something was bothering me. I couldn't get further than the quarter finals in the CL and I could never win the FA cup. I managed to beat Man City just 3 times in 6 seasons  I bought a new stadium and training and youth facilities were top notch. The club's stature was superb when I left them and they are now worth £452 million. They are in the top 10 richest clubs in the world. But I was still only able to get a £35 million transfer budget max and was always struggling with wages. So something was weird there.

Anyway, I was offered a job by Arsenal as soon as i resigned and for a laugh I thought I would accept it. THe manager of Arsenal then took my job at Huddersfield lol.. I now have a £99 million transfer budget and a £2 million wage budget. Instantly better than what i ever received as Huddersfield. Why is this? Arsenal are worth twice as much as Hudersfield, but even with successive wins in the PL I wasn't able to bring in more money.

I can see that Arsenal have a bigger and better stadium and one thing I've seen - they are bringing in £21 million a year through mechandising in Japan. Is this where I was going wrong? I had no merchandising as Huddersfield.

I've wondered this type of thing before - if certain clubs have a max cap on their potential progress, almost like a players max potential ability.

Similar problem with Harrogate, I'm always struggling for money. Just made the Premiership and the board are still being a bunch of tight ****s.

Hmmm that's interesting. Do clubs have a max cap then? I was thinking it might have been my fault - I could have introduced merchandising and various feeder clubs. I didn't realise merchandising would bring in as much money as it does to be honest. But even with a further £21 million it doesn't effect my transfer budget that much. There's a massive difference between £35 million and £99 million.. Yet Arsenal had not won the PL in many years - although they had won the CL and various other cups twice in succession.

I remember reading a post on here with some chap saying as Man U he had a £150 million transfer budget and I was left thinking how?

Something I've just thought about - does your chairman love the club or not? I have seen takeovers happen quite a few times where the chairman is not completely settled. Then your finances tend to improve.

It depends partly on debt and where the money is coming from, ie bank loans. So arsenal in the future usually have a 60k stadium, massive investment from the board and don't have to pay out dividends to shareholders....

On my 2 saves saints are broken because they have so many debts to pay, making prem survival impossible as I got not money (and stopped playing that one). At bishops stortford I have made it up the leagues with minimal debt so I still get some money but it takes a while of success before you get loads (3 champions league wins as burton in the last one to get the mega bucks). So until then you have to ride out small budgets on high potential players really...

Least you got a decent stadium, I've won the league with a 16004 seater stadium and have 11k of season ticket holders this year :( artificial limits in the game mean I need another 12 seasons before I can get a new one/expansion!

Exploit the flanks, get the ball forward combo gets the players to hit it on the break and cross it back in. Add work the ball into the box tried to get them to put the cross in when someone good has a chance of being there.

Thanks, added 'Work the Ball into the box' as well as adding another striker up front for the wingers to aim for and it worked a treat. Using a 3-1-3-1-2 formation so they have 2 strikers and an AMF to aim for and we've got out of the slump and back into winning ways.
The winning ways ended fairly abruptly against Man U as they were playing counter-attacking strategy and tore us apart. Must remember to change formation for certain teams.

Hmm that's a good point. The club is worth £1.08 billion or something ridiculous like that. They are the 3rd richest club in the world. But they have a £90 million debt as well. They have a 60k stadium and a lot of season tickets (many more than Huddersfield) but Huddersfield had a tiny debt of £700k in comparison. Arsenal DO have to pay out to shareholders. At least I got the email telling me so in my save :D So it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Sure, Arsenal are always going to have more stature than a club like Huddersfield, but how long should it take to start building it up. After 6 seasons I was receiving £30-40 million transfer budgets. But nothing higher. As I left the club they were part way through a new stadium upgrading it to 40k seats. Still a long way short of Arsenal's. But even still, they were something like the 9th richest in the world as I left them, and were doing exceptionally well in domestic competitions. Maybe that does make sense if you work out the math. I was never much good at it :D

What I'm trying to understand, would more input with the likes of feeder clubs and marketing, help push the club higher, or does this artificial cap mean I am fighting a losing battle.

But didn't older versions limit clubs in some ways? I remember editing databases in versions gone by and seeing that some clubs had a maximum crowd etc.
Yeah, they definitely had artificial, hard-wired 'unrealistic' limits in earlier versions, at least.

I always used to start careers with my home town, a League Of Wales team, which have a 'back door' to the Champions & Europa Leagues. Season after season, I'd be reaching the Champions League Finals, regularly playing the likes of Barca, Juve, Ajax etc.

Even though the club had one of the hghest statures in the game, and be rolling in cash with the best facilities, the game never gave us crowds that were big enough [apart from CL home ties, which were obviously all capacity] for the board to warrant moving to a bigger stadium. Hell, we weren't even getting the best crowds in the LoW, let alone weekly sellouts. The likes of TNS would still regularly get higher attendances, despite them doing the more-typical 'bomb out of Europe at the first hurdle'. I refuse to believe that this would happen in the real world.

Season ticket sales never got above... 50 :( [See?! A figure so unbelievable it's burned into memory :D]

So, into the second season of my new Villa game. Got the first lot of youth players through and this chap is the stand out. Going to try and put him into the team now, a few games into the second season. Hopefully his stats will rocket. He has four start potential, so hopefully could be brilliant!

Just played the young lad in his first game against Man Utd. Lost 2-1 but he scored a nice cheeky lob, was very composed considering the ball went over the top, he controlled it once and then lobbed the keeper. Keep it up Bonella! :D

Found it a real struggle to sign players of any real quality at the beginning of my first season in the premiership. I've definitely improved my squad but the signings are nearly all younger players with high potential, so not ideal!

It was nice to see we're going to get over £50m over the season, so if I can keep Harrogate in the Prem then I might be able to build a decent team next year.

First game in and it's away to Man Utd  - We lost 3-1. But then beat Blackburn and Burnley. Not a bad start really!

Right I am over my brief flirt with being Saints, got them to the prem in one decent week of gaming, finished second 1 point of Reading (just like last season in real life sadly), got to the perm and am in so much debt I can't buy any one, let alone stay up in the first place (needs a sugar daddy to come in and wipe out the debt along with a massive massive clear out of the highly paid players and I don't care enough yet).

Back to Bishops Stortford! Had a little inspiration after winning the league, got everyone I wanted to stay on fairly reasonable contracts (one or two are on silly ones but they are worth big bucks in the next 2 years) and have some QUALITY prospects ready too, an english striker with flair 20 being my greatest find! (who in england in real life as anything close to flair 10 is hilarious).

Aim this season is to get further in the champions league and win the league again, had to tell Suprs to get lost as the wanted me for the second time... Need to make Bishops Stortford a force before I leave for MLS/Saints/somewhere interesting (I want to get back to the Belgium 3rd division one day as that is the most hilarious in game league!)

For further comedy its 2021, Mancini has finally left city (3 titles and a few fa cup wins set out what they will be in real life...) and I have been offered the city job this season! Still don't want to leave but a comedy alt universe save is worth while because they have a better squad (and budget) than Spurs :)

Anyone else come across a bug with transfers where you cannot proceed? I had an offer accepted with the screen to offer contract, but when I click offer contract it says "A message will appear when an offer is accepted" Can't seem to get around it even if I cancel the offer, gonna lose a lot of progress if I load an old save
