Because moving a few small areas/builds ruins the entire map for everyone... riiight. It makes absolutely no sense to wipe everyone's builds when there are people who would be happy to help move them over. Only those build areas will be left with the old landscape and if the people occupying the builds are OK with that then who really cares?

It puts players who don't have their builds moved at a disadvantage? Give me a break, if you'd put loads of your time and effort into building something in the first place you'd get it moved over anyway. Of course you're not gonna care about the map getting wiped, but many of us do.

I've quoted your post but it's more of a general reply to everyone here I guess...

1) After the effort involved with moving builds last time it was decided that if another wipe were to happen we wouldn't be moving anything else. It would take a lot to make me change my mind on this.

2) A map wipe will only happen if there is no other option.

3) I personally think that the unstable land will be fine for getting an idea of what 1.8 brings to the table. *After* we have seen that we can then discuss and decide whether or not we think we should go for a wipe in the near future.

4) We are likely to get a lot of new players around the time the game comes out of beta so I personally feel this would be the best time for a wipe *IF* one occurs at all.

Ok as one of the long time mega builders i have decided that for me a map reset is not so bad. I knew that the game is in beta so if i loose my work so be it :P

FT **IF** the reset does happen could you send a backup of the map to my site.
If you still have the details that is :D. If not i will send them again.
At lest in that way i still get to keep the build i had.

So role on any changes i am happy to embrace the changes :D
But would like to have an area flattened when we do go full release
for me to make the mega build again :D

When there is a wipe (it's going to come at some point probably November-December time) I'll be sure to host a backup of the map along with some schematics as I'm going to be saving my builds at least! :p

LOL that is my plan too and i have the web space and bandwidth to host such a backup :D

Right, so there is no point trying to convince you otherwise as you seem set on not changing the map. Seems I'll be stuck to singeplayer when 1.8 comes out then, and wait for the map to be changed :(

Couldn't you guys just have a seperate world? Not a server, but a world with portals to and from? That way you get to keep the awesome builds and you get a brand new world for the new features.

This falls under the earlier post you made about judging something before it has happened. Once 1.8 is out we'll regenerate the unstable lands and *then* evaluate it.

We don't know how much difference it's going to make at the moment because we've not actually seen it. We can guess based on all the stuff they've posted but that's not the same as actually seeing it in action.

I cannot build in the unstable lands and one of my plans was to build a small river village. I cannot do that, so I will not play on the server. Nor will I be able to act out my other plans. So when I can act out these plans I will resume playing actively on the server.

I am not judging before trying it, because by doing this you have effectively set limits to what I can do so I decided to remove these limits by playing on single player until you lift these limits. If you have a problem with me deciding to stop playing on your server actively, then please tell me.

I have no problem with you playing or not playing on the server. You're welcome to play on it but beyond that I don't really have an opinion on the matter.

You say I'm limiting your play style and you're right. The problem is that wiping the world will be limiting the play style of other players. With a multiplayer server there needs to be compromise and to just come out and say that we're definitely wiping the server for a questionable (it remains questionable until we have seen it in action) gain would be unfair on a lot of players that are in the middle of large builds - and I'm not just talking about the players that are posting in the thread at the moment.

Wouldn't a 2nd world increase your RAM overheads a lot? I meant to ask how much RAM that test server used (as a RAM Drive).

I'm not sure how much it peaked at but I gave it something like 4 or 6 GB to play with. Luckily, server RAM isn't much of an issue now I've upgraded it.

I imagine running an extra world would increase RAM usage by at least 2 GB, perhaps 4. I don't think this would be a problem and the only potential issues I see with having an extra world are those of plugin stability and splitting the player population. Neither of these are insurmountable, though...

Well if a creative mode is apparently going to be added in 1.8, why not have a creative portion of the map?

If a plugin exists/comes out that allows us to keep inventories separate between a creative area and the 'normal' world then I don't see why not. I'd have to look into it at the time really.

edit: Actually, did I understand your post correctly? Do you mean a creative mode world or something else?

Technically no. Dont forget a server does not run entire maps at a time only chunks that people are around. OFC there may be a slight performance hit as it wil have to load data from two maps but it should not be very noticeable.

Looking at the way the server has been running lately(fantastic unless an admin is online) also when the test server was running (i assume this was run on the same server as the main one) when they set of insanely stupid amounts of tnt not even a glitch occurred on the primary map.

So, we could actually have a workaround by having 2 maps going? I'm sure more people would donate if we had to...I, for one, intend to when I've got some money, which should be soon haha!

Unless Bukkit/MC have fixed the annoying issue about chunks not unloading correctly we'll probably have slightly more overhead than that sadly - but as you say, not an amount that should cause problems.

edit: The problem with admins crashing the server is caused by me not updating plugins that I should do. It'll definitely be fixed once we move to the new server config/bukkit version (hopefully next week).

Donations are always appreciated but there's not a sliding scale of stuff I'll do for you based on how much/often people donate :)

It's definitely a potential workaround but I don't want to promise it until I've had a chance to test things properly.
