*** Official Rugby League SLXVI Thread ***

Welcome to the thread! (even if you are ANOTHER Wigan fan! ;))

I think what you say is correct and Brett Finch when he starts playing will be a good acquisition for you. Wigan seem pretty unstoppable now.

I am starting to wonder whether or not Willie Mason will arrive, but am leaning towards the possibility that he could become another Crocker for Hull FC. I have a feeling that the whole thing was leaked months before Hull KR actually wanted to release it. In that, their hands were forced into announcing it way before they wanted to because they wanted to avoid any potential embarressment which this is currently leading to.

Saying that, I could be 100% wrong!

Cas fan here and looking forward to the new season for a change. Lots of good things happening in the off season and finally we have a 6 and 7 some pace and a couple of big forwards. Not to bothered about the "big" loss of Shenton who was a good player but probably replaced with arundal. And Westerman has done nothing the last year so much potential and nothing. Would like to say thanks to Hull for taking him.

Was a bit worried with the licensing predicament but the past few weeks good news has been coming with the stadium, just need them to lay some bricks and will be sorted.

Think we will do better than most predict this year sneaky feeling 7th but any where in the play offs would do. Could do with a good cup run to.

Anyways really looking forward to it.

Slightly off topic but as im not off to cardiff is it going to be worth trying to watch it in 3D

Thanks :D

Brett Finch is a funny one, on paper it seems a good signing, but this injury has got me wondering just how effective he will end up being. I wouldn't say we are unstoppable, Warrington and Saints have very good squads and lets be honest, anyone can beat anyone on their day (something which you have to love about the Superleague). We've a few injuries, had we had the same a couple of years ago then there would have been major panic but in my opinion it shows what Ian Lenagan has brought to the club, a strong squad not just a strong team.

Should Mason come then I really can't decide what effect he will have, if i'm honest I think he's probably past his best and looking for a paycheck. But at the same time, if he plays as he can (and he can still play!) then he could be a very influencial player for you guys and could give that added bit of aggression. On his day he will be great to watch!

A big year for Chase this year, I think he'll be scoring tries rather than creating them as much. Definitely a player I like to watch. Is Arundal going to be starting? Think i've got him in my fantasy team :p

In my opinion it's going to be Wakefield that we lose, with a decent year on the pitch I think Cas could almost seal that, as I think Wakey are really going to struggle.

I would probably have to agree with you about Wakey sadly. It would be a great shame to lose them as they have great tradition as one of rugbt leagues stalwarts. I enjoy visiting their ground as I enjoy visiting the Jungle. The last games against Rovers at the Jungle and Craven park between the two sides were absolutely fantastic games and always so close and nailbiting. Chase is a quality, quality player.

I think wakey going into administration was perhaps he final nail in the coffin but who knows what tye rfl are going to say.

I was surprised at what was said abour westerman. Ive always rated the guy and on of my black and white friends across the river is touting him as agars signing of the season...

Who will do the kicking for the wire now that hodgson has joined them?

I like Wakey and to be honest I like their ground, I know it's going to be part of the reason why they go if they do, but for me with only a vague memory of going to central park as a little kid (i'm only 20) you can't beat the traditional grounds. The RFL came out and said that one team would definitely go down, so they've kind of made a rod for their own back, I think it'll have to be Wakey as Cas just seem that bit further ahead on and off the pitch.

I'm 99% sure that Hodgson will kick for Wire, he did in the friendly against us and he has 100% for them so far (from friendlies). The guy is undoubtedly quality, but I thought he looked tired towards the end of the game against us. Smith came out and said they hadn't signed him to play 80mins every week, bit strange considering he is a fullback, surely a position you would want to be consistent as much as possible?

Who do you guys reckon will be this years shock team? I think Bradford will surprise some people, they've got a decent squad now (it was threadbare last year) and their best signing has to be Mick Potter. The guy did a fantastic job at les cats, and as a Wigan fan I have to say he was so under-appreciated at Saints. He managed to get a team missing their first choice halves and with some inexperienced players into the grand final. He deserved another year at least, he will definitely make a huge impact on the Bulls.

I don't know about you guys teams, but Hull KR never seem to come out of pre-season feeling any fitter. I think the last couple of years there have been pretty heavy winters and have hampered pre-season training somewhat. I am a little more optimistic this time round though.

Can't wait to see Blake Green in action against the Black and Whites on Sunday. The Hull derbys are always massive games for the people of Hull and this will be no exception. I still think I was very lucky to be at the playoff victory for Hull KR at the end of last season. It was an absolutely fantastic atmosphere and a quality game. It was almost as if they put all their energies into winning that game and were wasted by the time the Wigan game came around. That was OUR Grand Final last year.

I think I am going to be camped on the sofa for the whole weekend!

They have done some good pre-season work on fitness this year and talking to the players they were saying how much leaner and fitter they felt.

I am away all weekend so will miss the opening games....gutted!

Chase will be a good player this year, Danny will take a lot of presure off him.

Westerman had a good first year but never really lived up to the hype. He could be a good player, but he has not moved on at all at Cas. Nerver really been the same since that seriouse injury he got to his head on the field. I think there is stuff off the field that may be affecting his perfomance.
TBH I think we arnt to bothered about him going especially with the amount that Hull paid for him.

Arundal looks to be starting, though theres a lot of compertition for places this year. I think our starting team will be
Mathers
Dixon
Arundal
Isa
Youngquest
Orr
Chase
Fozzard
Milner
Huby
Widders ( expect a big year from him)
Aspinwall
Ferres.

Subs
Walker
McGoldrick ( expect him to play in the centres which is his best position)
Emmit
Hudson

Then we have Owen coming back in a month or so.

I fully expect every team to be able to beat anyone on there day.

I agree i think it will be wakey loosing out the admin and Newmarket has set them back to far.

Looking forward to our new ground but hope we can take the atmospheare with us from the PROBIX colluseam lol

Until last year this is how I felt about Wigan, see the first game of the season home loss to Wakey the year before last as proof!

I'll be the same, would be going but my brother is working and dad doesn't fancy the drive so I don't fancy the trip on my own, saying that i'm still in two minds whether to buy a day return coach ticket off the Wigan website :D

Really looking forward to seeing him come back, looked a great prospect before his injury!

Warrington is Rovers first away game, I'll be at the Halliwell Jones without fail! Oh w**** w****! :D

Haha! I love Hull KR fans! Had a few of them sat in front of us at Wembey, they cheered at everything no matter what was going on! "WE ARE HULL KR I SAID WE ARE HULL KR" ........... :P

But in all seriousness as much as i like your fans i hope we beat you by a lot! :P

You have to cheer at everything to get behind your team. Wigan in the playoffs last year at the DW, even when it was clear Wigan were going to win, the singing never stopped. As a fan, I honestly believe Rovers players genuinely want to play for the fans, especially the Australian contingent of the team and also the likes of Peter Fox and Ben Cockayne who both absolutely lap it up.

Joel Clinton when he first arrived to applaud the fans after Rovers won their first game with him there was in awe at the volume of the East stand, you could definately see it in his face.

Wigan and the Wire are a noisy crowd and Leeds (when they are winning) are up there too.

Hull City's football atmosphere is absolutely appalling most days but when the derby is on and the Rugby League fans pour in, they make 100x the noise the footy fans do. It's so much more entertaining.

But in all seriousness as much as i like your fans i hope we beat you by a lot! :P

I'll allow you that belief! :)

Whats your predictions for the weekend?

COME ON THE WIRE!!!

I'm going to Sky+ the Warrington game, as believe it or not, one of my mates lent me his Hull City season passes so I will miss that game. Should be a good fight between the two sides but I expect Warry to edge it. Huddersfield don't have that many "big names" but when they play they are infuriatingly good, interesting to see Hodgson playing against his former club. They are definately Rovers bogey team. Will be interesting to see how Kevin Brown does this year (although I think he is massively over-rated).

As for my team, by the time we play, the pitch will be cut up a fair bit which would definately suit FC. But if Rovers kick well, they will win it, and win it comfortably. I believe we have some of the best backs in the competition and so if they can nip in with the tries, we have won the game as I am sure we can more than match FC in the forwards. I am eager to see how Blake Green does on the left with Dobson on the right.

Scoreline:

Rovers 28 - 12 Dullers.

Well thats our season over. 5 injuries in one game :\

Very unlucky, I hope the Matt King one wasn't as bad as it looked, don't often see league players look in that much pain, not good!

Overall not a bad day of rugby, though the Quins/Catalans game was pretty dire. Gutted we threw away the 16 point lead, but credit to Saints they kept going till the end. Thought Joel and Prescott cost us in the end giving away silly penalties, but without Deacon we lacked a pivot and the creativity just wasn't there in the second half. Not a bad way to start the season, i'm dissappointed with the draw, but then I look back 5 or 6 years and I realise that things aren't that bad after all :D
