Oh dear, gone and done it...

Ive been quite fortunate in that ive had a complete car worth of spares, but then additionally in 3 months ive bought a radiator and a set of 4 tires, plus tracking etc, probably ran to £500 and this is just "normal " use.

With a Celica remember to budget fuel at 25mpg on average id say, soon adds up esp if you want to do a long trip your fuel costs will probably double what you were used to, even more if you run it on super.

Try 20-22mpg and if it is an import it will have to be run on super, take it to a track and you will see 7mpg. 75mph on the motorway is around 27-28mpg. :)

Was just a rough guess, would expect more than that for the motorway though!

Track anything and your going to see stupid MPG but thats not normal usage and thus wouldnt budget for it.

Lowest ive seen is 17mpg over a whole tank of driving in my car, average about 25 and peak at low-mid 30s.

i think that as the OP is stretching his budget to buy the car, and that it's something that has to last a good few years, then he shouldn't even be considering something regarded as a performance car.
for £5k i'd be looking at something reliable, solid, nippy and a car that's going to be worth a good chunk of the 5 large when he comes to sell it to get his next car.

e36 323/5/8i?

The GT4's are holding their price well and are only really going to increase in value when more are broken or crashed and the imports stop in a few years. :)

they'll only increase in value if there is a huge demand for them and frankly, there isn't.
cars LOSE money regardless of how good they are.
there are VERY few exceptions to this rule and i don't think the Celica is one of them.

you cant get insured on a 200 or pulasr yet you can on a gt4 hows that work then.

No idea mate, that's insurance for you. Crap isn't it.

Anyone know why the GT4 has a little round intake thing on the bonnet next to the air scoop for the intercooler?

And what does TRD stand for? Toyota Race Designs? Vaguely remember it from Gran Turismo.

I am pretty sure it is for the chargecooler, the GT4 does not have an IC, and TRD Toyota Racing developments? IIRC

You take home £1k a month and pay £100 a month rent and still require a loan. Jesus.

No I could save but my car is not sounding healthy and requires work done to it and I don't want to spend anymore money on it.

Don't fancy getting a bus or train to work for a few months either so have opted for the a loan. I'll only be paying an extra £600 back to the bank.

VRS is too expensive to insure, not keen on the Cupra really and the Volvo is toooo big for my liking.

Have you actually ran a quote for an Octy vRS?

According to Parkers, a Celica GT-Four is IG 17 and the vRS is 16. Surely if you can get a quote for a GT-Four you can get one for the vRS?

I have and it was like £2k.

So you are fed up of buying 'old and decrepid' 10-15 year old cars for a few hundred quid. So instead you are going to buy a 10-15 year old car for a borrowed £5000.

Interesting logic there :p

I'm going to join in the "of dubious logic" camp here...

For £5k, and something you want to keep, I wouldn't spend it on a GT4. Looking on PH, the GT4s around that price range are 1994-1995 models, which are all 12 years old, and anything up to 100,000 miles - mostly ragged, due to the nature of the car. It's not going to be cheap to run, and it almost certainly won't last you many years.

It might just be me, but performance cars in the £1k-£5k bracket, of 5-15 years of age only tend to be owned for a year or so by their owners. Usually, I expect they get fed up of repair bills and sell them on sooner than expected...

Nice one. I was thinking about getting a Celica GT4 but I went for the MR2 Turbo instead. Very fast! I get around 220-230 miles from £38 of super unleaded of mainly off boost driving with the occasional blip here and there, which isn't too bad tbh.
