Oh god just came off playing DoD:Source and my cpu was at 64c!

Iv got a Intel D p4 2.8ghz cpu, and i have a thermaltake golden orb II on it.

I swapped the stock heatsink for the new one when i saw that it was idling at 55c ish.

Talked to my friend who does IT for a living and he said not to worry about it

What do i do

The temps inside the case are at a steady 27c all the time, so its definately the heatsink. Is there anything i can do to improve the effeciency of it? I am sure i put it on correctly, thin/even layer of paste etc.

From the reviews of the golden orb it seems as though it is capable of cooling cpu's well but mine just seems to be a bit of a nightmare!

My old heatsink used to run at 55 at idle, hence the reason i bought this heatsink (now running at 50 at idle), so i cant bear to imagine the temps it was hitting whilst gaming before

Don't worry about it. ;)
Its a prescott right? Waste of time spending money on exotic cooling solutions, as long as its not throttling its fine. You will have a devil of a job getting the thing down to sane temperatures and theres really no point.

i wouldnt worry about it, pentiums do run hot (not conroes though) however keep an eye out for reboots / crashes. get worried if it hits 70!

I've got one in my garage which is cooled fine with a tiny heatsink and no fan. ;) You mean prescotts get hot.

PHEW!

Its never ever ever rebooted or crashed for the last half year iv had it, so i guess its ok :p

Just me being paranoid then

I downloaded throttlewatch, not entirely sure how to use it. Should i be watching throttlewatch whilst doing some benchmarking and seeing if it throttles or not?

ps. what does throttle mean? and how much is expected?

pps. yes i am a noob :p

Thanks for the reassurance guys

That's about it. Run something that loads the core at 100% load, prime, keep an eye on the temps. Then watch the throttle frequency line, if it throttles it starts to dip down, until it cools then goes back up. It should be a straight line across the top. Throttling is either wait states (pauses) or reduced frequency.

Throttling is where the CPU detects that it is too hot and, instead of melting or burning up in some other way, it starts to skip cycles or use some other method to reduce its own speed so as to not overheat. If it starts throttling you'll know it because it'll instantly become dog-like in its performance.

dont worry, my single core prescott often hit 72C and didnt throttle yet, nvm a dual core, 64C is about the correct temp. for a dual core pentium, just make sure it doesnt rise much more...

Yes you should be feeling warm err better now.:p

Welcome to the forums btw.

as its a prescott core, buy one of these.

but make sure your wearing one of these over the top.
