Well i left my PC with a (computer illiterate) friend. Now it wont POST :( .

The "power on" light on the mobo still lights up, but when i hit the fun (on) button i get nothing no fans, nada nout! The only thing i get is the momentary flash of the diagnostic lights :(.

Now initially i would have said this was a mobo issue, but i have a suspicion that it could be the CPU as it didnt have the fan working correctly, but the cpu cooler was still keeping it cool enough passively. Now its very possible that the PC was left on in a warm room for several hours heating it up, but to blow the CPU? Usually it just restarts?!

If Any of you guys have any experiance with either a blown(ing) a CPU or mobo PLEASE HELP ME. (will pay e-beer as well as cookies! ;))

I realsise this is almost certainly a new bit of kit situation, but i dont have any spare parts to test it, so i would like to know what to buy, a CPU, or a new MOBO)

Spec:

AMD 64 San Diego 3700+
DFI SLI-D Lanparty
G.skill 2GB
ATI Radeon X800 GTO

Hmm, deja vu.

This threads name and even subject was posted before correct ? ( a long time ago).

hehe I can apprectiate that similar threads have been posted before, but it definately wasnt me. (and i searched)

And yes iKettles, I have tried switching it on lol (the motherboard has an on off switch on it anyways) i have reset the CMOS etc but still the same problem.

I realise that the computer almost certainly is broken (well a piece of it) and that it was not a particulary clever way to break it (if there is a clever way to do such a thing) I was asking if anyone here had any clues as to which piece of hardware had failed, or was most likely to have failed, as it will help me fix it!

Thanks peeps!

When I said shorting the pins I meant performing the same process that the power button does, simply touch the two power button pins at the same time on the motherboard using a screwdriver.

yeah done it no luck (tried after u suggested)

sorry if that came of as me being arsey lol.

tried it as you said w/ a screwdriver and also the normal button and also on the button on the mobo, still doesnt work at all :(

Have you considered that it might be the power supply? As the cpu should have shut the system down if it was getting too hot.

Yeah i suspect i could be the power supply, but its a reasonable make (enermax noisetaker) the wattage is more than ample, and the power light on the mobo stays on.

a bit of trouble shooting i guess!

the PSU is the only thing i can test! expect a post in about 1/2 an hour lol

Punch your friend until his wallet falls out.

Sorry, not that helpful. I recently had a PSU (Enermax Noisetaker) die on me and it ended up taking the motherboard with it :/ As a result I have a lot of spare parts for sale :(

Ok heres my tip.

Try building it outside the case on the motherboard tray, sounds like a short or a component is causing the mobo to stop posting to prevent damage.

Try one stick of memory at a time.

Disconnect all disk drives.

Doesnt sound like a write of thankfully, at most one bit will have gone. :)

Well thankfully the PSU just started another PC ! so thats ok!:)

Im really hoping it a Mobo shortage like yewan says, am re-building outside the case as we speak! Fingers crossed.

PS there was a screw loose in the case

 :(

Well i ran it oustide the case, on an old mobo box, and unfortunatley, the same old...... Diagnostic lights flash, fans do a 1/8th of a spin and everything (except the power on LED) is dead.

PC is running with only one stick of mem. and no discs just mobo, ram and GFX

still not sure if its the mobo or CPU ?!

I have added you to MSN for a quick chat. :)

Highly unlikely it is the chip at least. Given the board a one over for any burnt capaitors etc?
