Hi all,

OK, I am looking for some advice from any knowledgeable FSX fans. I am going to buy a system tonight, if not tomorrow. I am torn between 3.......

"Ultima Dreadnought" Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz @ 4.00GHz DDR3 SLI Option System.....

"Ultima Viper" Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz @ 4.00GHz DDR3 System (with GTX 470)

"Ultima Hydrophobia" Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz @ 4.00GHz DDR3 H2O System (with X2 GTX 460)

Ok first and foremost, I want to be able to ramp up FSX to very high settings. However I also have 3 monitors so I was wondering if I would be able to run all three if I took the Hydro with x2 GTX 460s? I.E. one main and two windows? However I know FSX is performance is mainly based on the CPU.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I hope for everyone's sake this thread doesn't turn into "you could build for cheaper" and people actually answer your question.

I'd take the Viper. It leaves you a spare slot, and if you want to upgrade your graphics later, all you have to do is buy another 470. Two 480s is overkill, even for three monitors.

I would say the Viper with the 480GTX option

still works out cheaper than the others,

I Personally like getting OCUK to build the computers now saves so much hassle & sometimes you just want it done for you :)

If you can afford it, I'd get the dreadnought but don't take the SLI option.... just run it with a single 480.

I expect the performance on all those systems would be fairly similar: Like you said, FSX's performance is mostly based on the CPU and it has never had very good support for multi-gpu setups. If you're primarily building for that particular game, a single gpu system would probably be the most sensible.

I expect he meant to link you to "the offical fsx thread". If you go back a bunch of pages you'll find it.

Like I said before, any of those systems would probably work well.... just avoid the dual-gpu setup as fsx doesn't like it. To run 3 monitors on fsx I'm pretty sure the most effective method is TH2Go with the best single gpu you can afford.

Having tweaked my rig a bit with some decent addons, I might suggest also thinking about fast HDDs in RAID0, a raptor, or even an SSD when you take your budget into account. One of my biggest issues isn't fps (even with an E8400 +5850) but more that my HDD can't load all the ground textures fast enough and they look blurry until it catches up. FWIW the viper + 480 option is a good one. Multi monitor is good for FSX for your radio stack/gps etc so well worth doing if you have the cash.
