Hey guys, never posted in motors before, hoping someone can give me some words of wisdom. So here's the story:

My friend has a mark 1 Polo. It's been sitting still (outside) for probably around 13 or 14 months, the battery is probably dead. When we jump start it the engine sounds like its about to turn over but just doesnt quite get there. All the dash lights come on etc. just the engine seems to have trouble.

Im hoping the engine hasnt seazed in this time, but dont really know a lot about cars to say for sure.

Can anyone suggest other things that are easy to implement that might get it going?

I wouldn't try and turn that engine over without first removing the rocker cover and pouring some nice fresh oily oil all over the cam and spinny bits up there. Of course not forgetting to let a bit of oil out of the sump as well, but I'd bet the oil level would need a top up anyway!

That should stop a lot of nasty nast nasty metal on metal contact fro mthe totally dry as a bone cam gear and followers, then its out with the spark plugs give them a tidy up, fresh battery, check the coolant, lots of WD40 around alternator/start motor if they look sized or in trouble.

If you want, and if its not an auto, stick it in gear and push it along, will let you know if the engine is seized!

Then post back stating what year this MK1 is and the important details like if it has chrome bumpers or the wooden dash/conical dials?

Sorry for the off topic, but i finally got that mk1 delivered. If you still wanna see pics ped then if i get back before dark tonight then i will see if i can get some online. Looks like a bit of a beaut and you seemed interested to see some piccies before?

Drain fuel tank & put a Gallon of fresh in, Pour half a mug of oil down the oil filler cap, Attach good rope & drag it around until it starts. JD.

Cool, forgot to mention I'm gonna change the oil. :

Sorry to be an idiot, but what exactly should I do with the spark plugs?

for the engine to fire up it needs a good spark, chances are those old plugs might be all gummed up and coroded from being old, take them out wirebrush the head quickly to remove the crap if they need it, check the gap, check if they are oily, the condition of the plugs will give you an idea to the engine condition - got a haynes manual anywhere? flip to the colour pages! (no not the 'body repair guide' !!! )

or just replce them with shiny new ones, a cheap way to eliminate a problem from the mix!
