as title, my flatmate didn't pay the TV licence and the TV licence bloke just came saying so. Now, as the TV licencing people have a tendency to hand out £1000 fines I was A) naturally ******* myself and B) elated to sign up for the quarterly direct debit he was offering. Now, she was supposed to have paid this months ago.. So, how can I go about getting her back, she's currently at the cinema so I have about an hour and a half to accumulate ideas. :D

fire away!

Are you sure she didn't pay, they are rubbish at keeping there records upto date.

As soon as she opens the door to come in, throw a pan of boiling water in her face! LOL! That'll teach her!

They are rubbish ... we got no fewer than three warning letters: I phoned them up after each, and they confirmed we DID have a license ....

at uni we had a warning letter every 2 weeks even though we had a license and confirmed it with them on numerous occasions, it's ridiculous.

Hide the tv and show her the paperwork.

Tell her you get it back after the first quarter has elapsed , some time in Feb.

:D

You could say you wrote him a cheque on the spot and she owes you a grand :p

If you don't let them in they can't do anything without a warrant. They can't prove you've been watching tv and they can't hand out a fine without evidence of it.

absolutely.

if they ever knocked on my door i'd tell them where to go!

Just a side point, if either of you are doing law and wants to practice law. A judgement against you without a TV licence will jeopardise your career before it even get started. Because the TV licence is a crime of dishonesty.

I have a tv in my room that I don't use at all, will I still be fined? I've got the aerial hidden on the offchance someone comes around snooping, but I really don't see how they could fine me if I never use it?
I should add someone else has a licence for the tv we watch in the kitchen.

see, how they operate is that everyone is a criminal, particularly students.

I hate that you have ot work so hard (calling, writing) to prove that you HAVE paid it!

The licence will cover you're whole flat, so its fine, you can stop hiding your aerial! :p

Er... they don't hand out £1000 fines on the spot. They need proof, and if you don't let them in – which you are by no means whatsoever, no matter how much they attempt to persuade you otherwise, obliged to do – they can't gain proof without getting a warrant to search the premises (which they need proof to obtain). As long as you tell them where to put their licence fee each time they come a-knockin', the best they can do is send you harshly-worded letters every few weeks.

The whole system is a mess, and I don't agree with the tactics they use to get people to cough up at all
