Hi I snagged one of the Sapphire 256mb bargains as a downgrade, and thought I would see what clocking is like compared to when they were first out.
But although I can set clocks using the ATI overclocker, and monitor them with rivatuner, they take effect in 2D, as soon as I fire up a 3d app they go to stock 3d clocks, and once thats finished drop to stock 2d clocks.
I tried overclocking with rivatuner and got the same result

I know the ATI overclocker has 2D and 3D clock, but the radio buttons are greyed out.

Its probably something simple I have forgotten from when I was overclocking the early X1800XL, but I can't think what.

As usual, ATI tool is trash, and shows artifacts even when the card is stock

Using Cat 6.4 no CCC as I am running ATI tray tool. (and I cant overclock with that as it doesnt support overcocking on X1 series still)

Get the same thing with mine, dunno what's the matter though, catalyst overdrive doesn't do anything, and ati tool just reboots the pc for an unknown reason. It's really annoying!

Over drive is useless.

what ever it reports take off 10% true clock for clock power.
it is a sneaky overclocking tool...

if you want true clocks do what i did and flash your x1800XT to PE with a official Sapphire Bios.

then again i have the 512 DDR version so there may not be a 256DDR bios to PE ect...

but either way those arent true clocks when useing overdrive.

Hmm, I am wondering if these have been locked in bios ?

Edit, nope as using overdrive in CCC it does work as expected, but the limits on that are way to low

Just tried ATI tool (ignoring the useless artifact scanner) and that does the same, alters 2D clocks but drops to stock in 3D, very strange.

I have just compared the bios from this card to the XTPE one using RaBiT V2.0 and all things look to be very similar, the bios version on the 256 xt is newer but the voltage etc is showing the same (looked at a club 3D 256 xt bios in the editor and it had lower voltage), but it doesn't show 3d clocks in the editor :(

And before anyone asks, no I am not going to flash it to see what happens :p
'cos A: I dont have a pci vid card if it goes pear shaped, and B: I am not even sure my mobo will run with a pci vid card !

Well I am pretty certain that the memory is maxed out at 800 so no great loss using CCC for that (792 actual max is what CCC overdrive gives) but I feel pretty confident the GPU has more in it (688 is the max overdrive sets), just I can't find a utility to overclock the 3d clocks (ATI Tool crashes on application exit)

Yeah done all that Rob, but it just crashes the machine when it comes out of 3D.
Not that it matters TBH, I just fancied tinkering for a bit, but hey ho ;)
