I'm in two minds so just looking for you too make my mind up as too whether or not to buy an Xbox 360 really.

I currently use my PC connected to my 26" Sammy for all my gaming and entertainment needs. I've looked at the games that you can buy for the Xbox and the games I would be interested in I can buy for the PC. I' not really that interested in the Xbox live. I have a standalone progressive scan dvd player hooked up to my Sammy via component to watch my dvd's.

Is there anything i'm missing. As I say just looking for any advantages over the PC that the Xbox 360 may give in terms of gameplay and entertainment/digital.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/opinions. :D

You shouldn't. Don't.

That is unless you want to play new games from the comfort of your couch, wireless controllers, great graphics and amazing online mode (You should get live! It's so worth it!). I, and many other people here, haven't touched PC gaming since December, it's dull and lifeless at the moment.

Dont buy, if the games you like for the 360 are on your PC and you aint interested in live (you fool ;) ) then stick with the pc. Think again when your pc struggles and a different console beats it hands down.

Until then stick with the pc and all its conflicts, driver issues, etc etc. :p

Seriously if the pc offers all you want, who am I to convince you. Dont buy, but I bet you will anyway, you just are seeking assurance your doing the right thing. Well your not stick with the pc :D

Havnt touched my pc for gaming in a month and a half since ive had mine, really is worth it if you like games, its rekindled my love them all over again!

Couldnt agree more, the 6800GT in my PC is some serious web browsing overkill now, to think I used to run the temp monitor to see how hot it got. Now I use it to chill lager ;)

Seeing as you've already got the HDTV setup, and I'd guess a reasonable/good optical surround setup.

So taking those considerations into account, and trying not to be biased to either PC or the 360:

  • The Xbox 360 will last you for a good 3-5 years
  • Compare that to a PC, for playing the most up to date games (financially anyway), that's going to save you hundreds of pounds in the long term.
  • But don't buy the thing just for pretty games, go for games that you want to, and will play.
  • You already have your PC connected to your TV, so that's alreay a fully capable media centre, along with your DVD player.
  • That leaves a 360 solely for playing games really, and it's only going to be viable if you don't want to be upgrading your PC all the time in my opinion, or if you've got games that are not going to be released on PC.
  • 360 has very good sound, proper 5.1 Dolby Digital output on games.
  • You really need to try out Xbox Live before you see if you like it or not, as it's a service that could make your break your decision to buy one.
  • Short term, there really aren't many games out, personally, there are only 2 games that I want to own, those are Oblivion and PGR3, and I'm not a massive fan of PGR3 as much now for some reason.
  • Long term, it's going to be a very broad range of games, and you'll really see the hardware being pushed and will be a good equal contender for the PS3.

I like third person shooters and racing games, which is why console gaming has always been number 1 for me. Like a lot of people and most of the guys here, I gave up pc gaming, I could barely run BF2, but it was just first person shooters, one after another, even FPS's on the xbox 360 are slightly different, like perfect dark. Ok, there are games like Quake IV, and FEAR is comming to the 360, but thats great for people who can't afford to shell out hundreds of pounds updating. I would recommend it, theres a good selection of games out and theres more to come! I would also say get on live, I found it much more sociable that pc gaming. With pc gaming it was just the same guys from the clan or whatever, but on live its more public, my friends list is nearly full now, its a great laugh and a little more laid back than pc gaming. Thats how I see it anyway...

Depends entirely what games you like, if you like non-sim/strategy games i'd go for the 360.

if you like sim/ strategy games then stick with the Pc as you will find little to appeal to you on the 360.

I'd als definately go for live as well, as multiplayer adds a lot to games, especially FPS and driving games, which have what 20 hours to complete at most, eg, COD2 took my about 6 hours at most, PDZ took about the same, out of all my games Amped 3 took he longest to complete and as there are still multiple things for me left to do it keeps me coming back, while PDZ and COD2 don't, as i don't want live ATM as i have exams coming up, and Halo 2 will steal my life again, as my old clan buds are back on it :D

So in conclusion if you like FPS games get one, and if you get one get Live as well as it is huge amounts of fun :D Got some awesome memories of XBl on my x-box, mainly the one which involved me and my ex pasting someone while shall we say otherwise engaged :D

Couldn't agree more. In fact I went one further sold my PC and replaced it with a wireless laptop.

As people have said, it depends on the sort of games you like to play. With the PC I was stuck in a rut, buying games from series I knew I'd like but getting bored easily. With the 360 I've tried genre's I wouldn't normally dally with and loved it, I had an Xbox but I didn't really get the same buzz as I have now. I also got one on launch day and I'm still feeling the same way.

Tell us which games you fancy and we'll tell you how good they really are ;)

Best purchase i ever made almost got a dual core cpu for my pc, so so glad i didn't bother i would still be bored with gaming as pc gaming side is pretty poor atm.

This the best gaming i had for a good year, i like most had got bored of the pc gaming side and took the plunge on a 360, best move i ever did, my pc is used for browsing/dl etc nothing more.

Personally I'd say no. Haven't bought a 360 because for me there hasn't been enough good games. Oblivion and PGR3 are both tempting though.

Interestingly this has been the first Console since the Megadrive I haven't bought at launch (including the 3DO!). No Halo was the major turn off for me. I still remember the wow factor playing that at launch on the original Xbox.

More to the point, in your post above you say your happy with PC versions of the games that tempt you, so I'd say save your pennies and wait a while. Depending on how long you leave it; you'll 'may' benefit from hardware revisions/bigger HD or reduced RRP.

For interesting factor after deciding not to get an Xbox 360 in December I started rebuilding a Gamecube collection from scratch (again). For approx £400 I've picked up a PAL GC, a switched US GC (£25), 2 x Wavebirds, 2 x 1019 memory cards, 10 x new PAL games, 5 x Jap GC Games and 5 x US Games and a few other things. This has meant I've managed to play RE4 for the first time, play Monkey Ball again and enjoy Ikaruga in 60hz. My latest catch a sealed Shikigami No Shiro: Limited Edition with Cat for £30.

So for similar money I've managed to enjoy some great GC console gaming. Just a thought.
