Okay to overtake a police car?

Whenever I see people not overtaking a police car I assume that they are guilty of something and do not want to draw attention to themselves.

The best is when it is a highways agency car - people crawl up to it, and as soon as they realise it is not the police they give it a boot full!

You wont get busted for overtaking them if they are going slower that the posted limit and you do so safely.

I overtake coppers often on the way to/from work (pass a police station). Granted I first hang up the phone and put my cornflakes down :D
:D
I do the same. Once I stopped on red light next to the copper. I was on the left lane, he was on the right. I though that he is going to turn right. But now he was driving straight, so am I. But I put my right feet little bit to much of throttle and overtook him. You should see his face.

For the same reason that people slow down to 30mph for a speed camera near where I live regardless of the fact that the speed limit is actually 40mph. ie. they aren't really paying attention to the road signs and have no idea what the actual limit is on the bit of road they are on. I can't think of any other particularly valid reason for this behaviour.

Perhaps signage overload? Stop paying attention to signs... Not saying I do this, but with other things in life, stuff gets subconsciously tuned out.

I overtook a speed camera van the other day.

The whole point about them doing way less than the local limit is that people are supposed to pass them. If they were doing 71 in a 70 I'd understand people being nervous about going past, but they stick well below the limit to make sure people aren't so worried. It doesn't work. I've passed one at 85 and they've done nothing: nowadays speeding alone will not produce a tug unless you are doing well over 90. They are far more interested in what the ANPR is telling them, and which people look shifty or are driving badly/using a phone etc.

Was making progress down a dual carriageway, out of the corner of my eye i see a police car coming down the sliproad on a call, blues and twos running. Once they caught up to me i got the "you'll do for later" stare. Opps.

Of course (unless it's going faster than the limit).
Those who slow down below the speed limit and stay behind it are morons.

And the police who do 1-2 mph over are ****s too :o

That may be because most police cars have calibrated speedos, whereas everyone elses is allowed to over read by up to 10%.

I once overtook a police car on a NSL dual carriageway, he was doing 50mph so i overtook him at 70mph and proceeded with my journy. 1/2 a mile later i see a car come flying up behind me and then stick the blues and twos on. I pull over and he asks if i knew how fast i was going, "70" i said, he said "we had to do atleast 95mph to catch up with you!".

It doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out, that if hes doing 20mph slower than me, then yes of course hes going to have to go quite quick to bridge the gap! Nevertheless i stayed polite and everything was hunky dory. I suspect it was road education he was looking to hand out, after a group of young lads ploughed head on into an elderly couples car 2 weeks previous, killing everyone.

A friend of mine was banned for 12 months becasue the police had to catch up to him at 125mph and stated that was the speed he was travelling in court. He was also convicted of "racing" another car when simply it passed him at a greater speed but was never stopped. My friend was speeding, but he wasn't doing 125mph, more like ~80 in a 60. They stopped him (Merc) but not the Astra that he was apparently racing. No speed camera recorded the offence, it was all on the officers word who was in an un marked Fiesta. pretty sad really, but as my friend was young and had a nice car they made an example of him.
