old style mini from newer cars?!

i'm still undecided, my major worry is that that novelty factor wears thin after a short time and it starts to annoy me!
guess there's a lot resting on the test drive!

You should be really scared about crashing. Every time you drive. And then be scared and post about it on the internet because everyone who drives cars without driver aids and safety features is dangerous and a risk to everybody else as well. And you will crash without any of that stuff, it's inevitable. You should only buy the safest car possible, it's for your own protection.

Probably.

The only time I've ever tired of driving mine was doing 200 miles after hurting my back. But I'm 19 and don't know any better so shh ;)

+1 ;)

Quoted for the lolz:

Even if it does wear off, which it should not, you can always sell it and maybe make a bit of profit unless you stack into a hedge. :p

Check this forum out because there is an epic wealth of knowledge on there if you ever get stuck/want opinions/ideas/deals etc: http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/index.php?&Itemid=45

Exactly. A non-rusty mini isn't even that bad in an accident compared to most classics; but properly rusty ones don't fare well.

I crashed into the back of a van at 20mph or so and the only thing that was broken was the lights, front wings, and front panel, same as any modern car I expect. They arn't SLOWSPEED ACCIDENT DEATH as people say. Not saying they are safe, but just crashing won't rip your legs off :p

the budget is not 100% set yet waiting to hear back from the insurance company with an offer for my old car! but looking at something around the 2k mark really(revised budget after looking for a bit!!) got a few in that price bracket to look at, but it's more the running costs/insurance that i'm thinkin about rather than the initial outlay... with my budget i'm expecting any car i get to not be perfect but we can all dream!

I can't see running costs or insurance being a problem as such. For my age (started driving it at 17, now 19) it was the cheapest thing out there for insurance, looking at £1100 max fully comp when it's renewal time. I have crashed mine before - completely my fault and not the cars. I didnt get it back for over a month.

It was a sad time. :(

I keep thinking about getting another mini, but one thing that puts me off is rust. Engines, transmissions and running gear needing work I can cope with, but I hate doing bodywork!

Just to add: Thank god when I crashed it, it wasn't written off by the insurance company as by the end of it all the insurance company said total cost was £2300 to repair/labour etc.

I almost died to be blunt. Went into the back of a tractor which had a flat bed trailer on the back. The mini being so low in terms of ride height meant that the flatbed where you have the lights/huge metal(steel?) bar goes across the back (like on lorries and such). So that went into the car (wasn't doing a huge amount of speed when I hit it as I slammed on the brakes before hand but it simply wasn't enough.)

From what I can remember, the damage was like so:
Bonnet - dented, scraped, needed replacing basically.
Bulk head - not sure on the name for this but it needed replacing as well (not an easy job apparently) what I mean is the panel which has the wipers/washer on the car.
Windscreen - completely smashed in and need replacing as well as the surround.
Top dashboard - basically just black plastic top which when the glass go smashed sort of went **** up but luckily none of the wood/dials etc were damaged.
Wipers - couldn't source the same ones for some reason so gave me those chrome ones
Glass - was everywhere, all over me, seats, carpets...everything. Still finding bits in the carpet even over a year later.

:(

Your budget should factor in what engine as I assume you have been looking at carbs. For piece of mind I would up the 2k budget and find a fuel injected one. ;)

blackhawk, the one's i've got lined up for viewings tomorrow are all the 1.3i later models, guess the trade off will be the bodywork!! my problem is quite similar to quickshot there, in that i have got about 4 to see over the whole of scotland...

How far can you travel to view them? I would honestly make the effort to travel 100+ miles to view it if it looks like the perfect car.
