Never bought a digi camera before, so basically I'm after a fairly cheap but decent one. I can get a Olympus FE-100 locally for 70 quid and was wondering if this would be handy for taking the odd family pics etc.

Thanks for the input Lostkat, startup and shutter lag mean nothing to me LoL, I just needed a bit of advice if it would be worth the money or if I shoild be looking at a different make but shelling out a similar amount of money.

Start up = time it takes to spring into life after you've pressed the ON button
Shutter lag = time it takes to take a photo after you've pressed the shutter

Olympus are a decent make of camera, and for £70 it looks fine.

Hi there, my two cents would be - Olympus while having some nice ideas about the ruggedness of a camera, fall over often in the optics department. But for £70 you can't ask for too much and I suspect that if that is what you are willing to spend on a camera, then you won't be asking too much of it :)

Will probably be a fairly reasonable point and shoot! Personally I'd advise saving up a bit more and going for one of the more refined brands such as Sony, Nikon and Canon. I would go with one of the Canon Ixus compacts as I have had great experiences with them. I think the mentality of taking photos is that your keeping memories and they are nicer when they are clear :) Good Luck :D

Thanks for your input Steve and I can understand what your saying, and somewhat agree, but as regards clear pictures etc, I would have thought that any digital camera today produces clearer/nicer pictures than on any 70's/80's cheapo cameras of the past that I have had

As I said, I'm not into photography in any big way at all, just want to be able to take some fairly decent Family snaps etc.

I think it's a bit of a mine field buying a digi camera unless you want to spend some serious money. We have a few at our local school where I work and most are simply awfull at taking any sort picture with movement or low light. If you slightly move when pressing the shutter , you'll get a blurred image. We have 3 fuji cameras , excellent outdoors in good light but otherwise poor.I have to resort to taking my Minolta Dimage 7 camera for sports day and indoor work. This is indeed an old camera now but takes very good pictures for a 5mp camera .I once saw a good tip on TV for buying a digital camera, when your in the shop trying them out as you press the shutter , drop a set of keys in front of the lens .On preview , if you can see your keys ,it has a fast shutter , if not ,put the camera back on the shelf and try another .Go try that out this weekend at Curry's or Dixon's . :-)

Digic II

I am currently in the market for a £100 ish camera for my daughter, and am leaning towards the Canon A410 at around £95. This features the same DIGIC II processor as their more expensive models so it should be quick enough.

Olympus make some great cameras, I have the C8080, but I don't think their budget models stand out from the crowd. £70 is a good price though, so if that is your limit I would go for it!
