Omar Rodríguez-López and the Mars Volta

So ATDI are definitely worth looking into?

Yes but don't expect the same jazzy experimental prog-rocky smoothness of TMV. It's a different kettle of fish. Mush more raw.

Fair enough.
I thought Relationship of Command was completely different to most of the stuff about at the time. I can't remember any bands about that sounded anything like them. Can you?

Fugazi, Refused.... ATDI were at the very tail end of the post-hardcore scene.

i love when ATDI went crazy on jools holland.

Saw it live at the time. Didn't know what the hell I was watching.

I'll tell you something though, I never forgot that performance, even when I wasn't a fan of TMV or ATDI.

Totally agree with all the comments of TMV not being as good since Deloused, but there have been some mind-blowing songs since - e.g. 'Viscera Eyes'. I really hope the next album gets back towards the earlier style, as they've veered a bit too much towards ambient noise for my liking, and it'd be nice to get the 'song' back.

I do still prefer ATDI, but that's mainly because I love every song on Relationship, and most of the songs on In Casino, Out. For anyone who hasn't already picked it up, the Vaya EP is awesome. And just for nostalgia's sake...

My Octahedron vinyl came today, will listen when I get a chance

Can't wait to collect them all on vinyl

Lysander can you take a picture of your framed vinyl please?

A slightly different stance but not a trolling one :)...

I find all of the 'band variations' of ORL really hit & miss; I love Inertiatic Esp, Pattern against user, Invalid Litter Department, Lopsided, One Armed Scissor but then I find some of the more transient tracks really tedious.

Agadez I cannot connect with despite recommendations of others rating it in their 'favourite all time' lists etc. I'm a fan of progressive, unusual and layered music - Tool, NiN, Marmaduke Duke and Mogwai: I can stick on a feel all their environments with great pleasure.

I'm almost 'disappointed' that I'm missing the connections that others are raving about so highly, but I guess that's one of the pleasures of interpretation and the subjective :)

Another lover of De-Loused here. Absolutely awesome album and I only came across it by chance. I found it to be instantly listenable, whereas the others do take some time to get it, but ultimately in most cases its well worth it.

I have found them to be a bit hit and miss since that album though.

I'm the same in probably missing what others are getting.

Not got any of his solo work. What ORL albums would one start with ?

Thanks :)

At The Drive-In were infinitely superior.
Not to say De-Loused was a bad album, Relationship of Command was just much better.

I agree with this, when ATDI split, there were two bands that came out of it, TMV and I just can't remember the other group now, anyone help?

I REALLY enjoyed A Manual Dexterity. He has a massive back catalouge so a lot to work through!

Been on a TMV kick recently so thought I'd dig up this old thread.

My opinion has changed from a year ago, DITC is amazing but Frances the Mute tops it ever so slightly.
Miranda that Ghost isn't Holy Anymore and Cassandra Geminni are just brilliant.

Bedlam and Amputechure are both excellent as well, Octahedron is fairly good as well. However, Noctourniquet isn't very good, it only has 2 good songs which are The Malkin Jewel and Zed and Two Naughts

I shall be listening to these soon, hopefully I'll enjoy them as much as I do TMV
