Apparently Vodafone do not allow this, my old Vodafone contract I was able to downgrade by tariff after 4-5 months IIRC, however according to Vodafone with a 24 month contract (this is not possible?)

Has anyone had any luck in doing this? Are there ways around it?

T-mobile don't allow this either. I have asked about it as I wanted to downgrade to a £25 month traiff from £30.

I think it's bisurk and people should be allowed to downgrade their trariff after 6 months of any contract be 12/18/24.

It makes sense. They offer huge discounts on phones based on the monthly price that you pay. Why should they let you suddenly start paying less for a contract?

They offer the same phone, on £20/£25/£30/£35/£40/£45/£50 month contracts regardless. You just get less minuits/texts/Internet for what you pay. So yes, they should allow it.

Because people who sign up for a contract end up paying a lot more when it first come out, then all of a sudden they drop the price even before the first 2 months of phone release

So I think people should have the choice to downgrade the tarrif after say 5-6 months.

Seems slightly unfair for those who decided to cough up when it first came out rather than waiting.

As mentioned, Vodafone don't allow this, I tried to downgrade when I took out my 24month contract aswell.

You signed a contract to pay £x for y months.
New phones are discounted based on the amount you are willing to sign up to.

Yes the same phone is offered on all contracts from a network, but if you skimp on a cheap price plan then you will pay more initially for the phone. Sign up for a costly price plan and you will get the phone cheap/free.

You wouldn't buy a car for £10,000 then 3 months later see the same dealer selling the car for £7,000 and go say you want £3,000 back, would you?

Im with you on this one!

Just because you think it is unfair, doesn't mean it is. Its just one more reason to read the small print before taking out a tariff.

The prices of the phones go down, phone companies are ripping customers off hugly just because they can't downgrade their tariff!

So wait until you are happy to pay the price?
You are the one signing up to the contract, paying for the phone.

Do you understand that phones are discounted by the networks when the contract starts?

They go down, yes. But they go down after you have started the contract. The purchase price for the one you have is still the same as in the first place.

They still should allow downgrading if you don't use the allocated minuits/txts/internet.

Why? You have had a discounted phone based on the money you will pay for the life of the contract.
If you expect to be able to pay less, should the network be able to charge you again for the phone?

Yes but they will have paid more for your phone than the same phone bought a few months later, so why should they absorb the cost?

I'm going to take;
HTC Desire on Vodaphone for example.

£25.00, 0100 Mins, 500 Texts, 0500 MB INT, 24 Months Contract, Free
£30.00, 0600 Mins, UNL Texts, 0500 MB INT, 24 Months Contract, Free
£35.00, 0900 Mins, UNL Texts, 0750 MB INT, 24 Months Contract, Free
£40.00, 1200 Mins, UNL Texts, 0750 MB INT, 24 Months Contract, Free
£55.00, 3000 Mins, UNL Texts, 1024 MB INT, 24 Months Contract, Free

In this case, the phone is free all around. Why shouldn't a user be able to downgrade their tariff after 6 months???

Should people whose houses lose value ask their mortgage providers if they can suddenly pay less per month but keep the same terms otherwise?

You signed the contract, maybe you should have read it beforehand.
